Frustration and what ifs

By David B (legacy user)15/4/2014 17:23Tue Apr 15 17:23:14 2014

Hendon would be in the playoffs - and possibly even looking at second place - but for three gigantic ifs.

If we had started the season with 12 points from seven games, instead of five ?

If our home record showed half the defeats being draws and half the draws being more victories ?

If we did better than five points out of 24 against the teans in 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st. Four wins and two draws from those eight games would have brought nine more points ?

This all proves the famous football adage, ?the table doesn't lie" and we are where we are, because of those three factors. There is no point ranting and raving, just accept the fact.

And remember, we are punching far above our weight. If it wasn't for our fantastic management team and brilliant squad, we would be in the battle between 17th and 22nd, or even lower, and not looking down without a care in the world!

The one about not getting the points off the bottom third teams is the most annoying, especially after beating most of the top teams.

The biggest what if for me is what if we hadn't bottled eight points in a week this week from winning positions, stick those points on the table and suddenly we would have had a real chance.

Oh well, have to agree with the final point, Gary continues to work miracles to put us in the top half of the table, shame we don't have our almost usual Cup Final appearance to round off the campaign though, but here's hoping for more miracles from Gary and the management team next season.

Haven't decided whether to go to Bognor or not yet, but will see you all next season if you're not down at the seaside, can't motivate myself to spend money travelling to Earlsmead for a dead rubber against Grays, and I'm in Glasgow the following Saturday.

Paul,
I'll just have to laugh on my own if an opposing player falls down in comical fashion, thus incurring the wrath of everyone else single handed.
I won't be going to Bognor so have a good summer and see you next season.

For those who may be interested - Michael tore his ankle ligaments as he landed on Monday. I'm sure all will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery, particularly as he never let us down when he was in a Hendon shirt.

Torn ankle ligaments is a nasty injury, but given some of the things that went through my mind as crashed to the ground on Monday night, that is a very good diagnosis. I have spoken to about half a dozen people in the past six weeks who have ruptured their achilles tendon (including two ex-Hendon people at Carshalton, Curtis Warmington and Paul Scott), and I feared that might be Schmikes's fate too.

Paul and I were very close to the incident on Monday and the way in which Michael went down appeared comical at first, and we laughed as a result, it wasn't something we chose to do, it just appeared funny. When the seriousness of the situation became apparent I feared something very bad was unfolding before us and was relieved it was not another Fabrice Muamba or similar.
Best wishes to Michael in his recovery.

Of course I wish Michael all the best, as I already have done on Facebook in a reply to Danny Dyer's post regarding the game.
