Dan Butler

I was hearing a lot of criticism directed at him first half at Carlisle.

But I want to put forward an alternative take.

Now, in a half where we were absolutely shite, Butler probably had the most involvement/influence of any Boro player. Yes some passes went astray and most corners failed to beat the first man, but at least he wasn't hiding.

To me the problem wasn't Butler, the problem was the players you didn't notice.

The players that don't want the ball, the ones who go missing when things aren't going well. They escape criticism because they've been hiding from the ball. We had too many of those first half but none will be singled out as much because they didn't make any errors as such (because they hardly got near the ball).

Yet the one who gets involved, tries his best to do something and doesn't shy away from the ball is the one who gets all the abuse.

This for me creates a mindset problem, because it will just lead to more players not wanting the ball and wanting to go unnoticed as they're scared of doing stuff wrong.

I'd rather have an environment where players are not scared of making mistakes/errors, so that half the team don't go missing.
