Horror show... one fast train every half hour then three at 9am. They're already rammed!

Between 6.00 and 9.00 this morning, 4 out of 9 fast trains to St Pancras cancelled. Then none at all for TWO HOURS.

This has been handled like building a brand new carriageway for the A1(M), diverting all London-bound traffic onto it, and then on day 1 having one lane open.

We should nationalise the railways.

Civil servants and politicians definitely know how to manage complex stuff.

Remember how great British Rail was...

BR was being run down because there was no future in rail due to the traditional freight industries dying off and everyone having a car, in addition to their City job wearing braces and carrying a massive phone.

Passenger numbers today should mean a license to print money, and yet these franchises seem more bother to private operators than they're worth.

Britain’s privatised railways have been getting around £5 billion on average in government support over the last five years.

In the last five years of the 1980s—the earliest period we have figures for before privatisation—it was an average of £1.6 billion in today’s money.

As bad a BR was, I am fairly sure the private companies are not 300% better

I'm failing to see what the benefit of trains running through London to Brighton, Horsham and the like actually is (not that any trains from Hatfield actually go via St Pancras through to the south). Their core function should be to get people into London mainly for the purpose of work. The tube does the pissing around London bit.

Yes, I must admit that the tube is horribly busy at peak times and something needs to be done. This has been badly implemented though and I'm just annoyed!

Er, the new timetable hasn't started yet. If your issue is with current experience, it's the old timetable that's being replaced. Have a look at the service from next Monday instead...

And there will be 5 fast trains per hour in the peaks, but much better spread out than the old timetable

Edit: for info, the GN commuter trains comparison for trains departing Stevenage 6am-9am:

Current:
603
623
649
658
707
724
736
738
758
801
808
827
832
858
14 trains (with 2 bunches at 736/738 and 758/801)

New timetable:
617 Cross London
632 Cross London
647 Cross London * starts 4th June
649 Kings Cross
717 Cross London
720 Kings Cross
732 Cross London
747 Cross London
751 Kings Cross
817 Cross London
821 Kings Cross
832 Cross London
847 Cross London
853 Kings Cross
14 trains

Then from December there's 1 extra train per hour at xx02 increasing it to 17 trains, replacing the Hertford line trains

Mind you that was in the British Rail days. Cheap, but lucky to get a train at all.

Was originally supposed to be May but that was when the whole thameslink programme was supposed to be completed in December. They've slowed implementation down so that it's not completed until December 2019 now, so the extra train to london/removal of the through Hertford service doesn't happen until December.

Yep, NR have agreed to hurry the fuck up with it so it should be ready for May 2020.

But this is Network Rail, so take that with a pinch of salt

Kings Cross is hardly going to be an option from 20th - St Pancras or Finsbury Park will both afford better journeys into central London. Mind you, through trains to Brighton for when we meet them in the FA Cup!

I only use the train now and then thank God.

What has bought this all on? Surely a train to Fins Park and a stroll down the spiral staircase to the Victoria line was fine.

All of this seems to be hassling people's lives?

In brief...the relieve the interchanges at Kings cross, Victoria, London bridge, Charing cross etc. To relieve the underground, to make people's end to end journeys shorter, and open up many direct cross-london journey opportunities.
