The Big One

Our #SilverwareSeason continues tonight then, Cheshunt away.

Lose tonight and I am afraid it will be Goodliffe Out.

It was a chance for Watson to win us over last time we went there and he screwed it up along with Sarll. This must not be repeated! At least we won't be seeing Jebb or Mark Hughes again (ignoring that their captain goes by the same name). I do miss Lee and Marriott though.

Crowe; Wade-Slater, Hughes, Johnson, Smyth; Conlon, Jebb (Akinyemi), Gorman, Sweeney; Lee, Marriott.

Despite having SEVEN full time professional footballers out there tonight, we not only lost 2-1 but other than the goal we didn't have any meaningful shots or work the keeper, and they looked the fitter side in the second half. TvC also limped off injured. And it was bloody cold.

The positives were that Gibson scored a nice goal, McKee looked like everything we are missing alongside Timlin/Byrom and our #3 (not sure whether Frazer-Robinson or Okoye) did well.

I don't think it's the players any more, it's the bullshit tactics.

Don't get me wrong McKee was decent but neither him or Ball turned in to space to run 10/20 yards with the ball and take the game to Cheshunt.

It's always the safe option back to the defenders every time.

Yup.

Pretty obvious that is our intention and that this is what Jase was instructed to implement tonight (Dino was in the stand with Ali U, and Wallace).

When it gets the same result with the majority of a side of FT pros against a load of PTs four tiers below as it does in the league, where yet again you create nothing and it looks an even contest, surely alarm bells must start sounding?

I cannot believe how unfit we still look too, I really thought that would be one of Dino's big things. They looked fitter and stronger.

I noticed that 'in possession' coach we got from Arsenal was in the dugout with Jase last night. Absolute joke we are employing somebody in that role in addition to all the other coaches, it hasn't made a blind bit of difference.

"In possession coach from Arsenal"

I wasn't aware of this but it explains an awful lot. Fuck sake no wonder we are so boring and shit just passing sideways and never shooting. Thats what Arsenal specialise in.

Maybe I could be the "Teaching players to run forwards and kick the ball towards the goal coach?"

http://www.stevenagefc.com/news/2018/december/steve-gatting-appointed-assistant-coach-stevenage-fc-14th-december-2018/

'Dino Maamria says that Gatting’s experience at Arsenal will see him take on some specific roles within the team.

“Steve will be our in-possession coach and will have a big influence on the younger players we are bringing through, too. He will be very helpful on the training pitch and will really develop us with our play when we have the ball.

“Using his experience of coaching at Arsenal, Steve will definitely add something to us and we welcome him to the football club. Hopefully we will be more creative and score more goals – that is what he is here for.”'

Played better going forward when the other coach was here at the start of the season.

If he is the reason for this inane pass around the back shit until we panic and lump it down the channels (or more likely, out of play), he can fuck right off.
This season has put me off more than Gary Smith era, never mind trying to attract others to come along.

The lumping forward in panic says more about the mobility of the midfielders than it does about the quality of the defenders.

There should be set patterns of play for playing out from the back. It's basic Level 3 stuff. If it isn't happening, it's usually because the midfielders aren't moving into the correct positions to receive the ball, and then the other midfielders aren't looking to receive the next pass.

Given how much people are complaining about the lack of mobility of our midfielders, it doesn't shock me.

Nope, still in Canada.

It was more a commentary on game mechanics rather than an observation.

I assume one (or many) of the following are happening:
a) The defender in possession has no midfielder offering a short option. The ball moves around the back four trying to create a short pass option into midfield. This continues for a few passes before one of the defenders eventually gets bored and hits a long diagonal pass.
b) The defender has one short pass option when one of the central midfielders drops deep to receive the ball. That midfielder then has no option for the second pass, so drops the ball back to the defender. Resort to scenario "a".
c) The midfielder comes short to collect the ball, is too slow in possession and gets dispossessed by the opposition midfield. This happens enough times that the defenders don't trust passing the ball to the midfield unless they have acres of space. Resort to scenario "a" or "b".

It's b and c more this season. Used to be a.

We have plenty of possession and sideways passing but it never results in any sort of meaningful chance.

However that has changed since Chair arrived. We now have someone who can either create something or, and this is something rather extraordinary for this team, have a shot that sometimes goes on target.

Look much better going forward as a result.

Although he played at Tranmere and cpuldnt do anything in one of the worst team performances of the season.

If the Willmott money lasts a bit longer then, yes, you are probably right. But I'm taking a historic view in that all clubs eventually fall back to their natural level - and ours, I would suggest, is the Conference. Look at teams like Barnet, Kidderminster, Dagenham, Aldershot - teams that are similar to us in terms of crowds and infrastructure- who have fallen, eventually, back into non-league. Looks like Yeovil, who have a much larger fanbase than ours, will be continuing their freefallas well and will be non league again next season. As I said, it's just a hunch. I hope it doesnt happen of course

No, because there is always some utter dross kicking about the bottom and I think we are better than that, but nothing I have seen makes me think it will be any better than this season.

The summer is big for me, a manager should get two or three full transfer windows to be properly judged, depending on when they come in, as that gives them adequate time to assess their squad, clear out who they do not want, bring in who they do, and importantly then have an additional window to tidy up any previous transfer window misfirings, which will always happen when needing to take a punt on players as we do.

Dino has had one full summer and a winter window to bring in his type of players, some of whom have been good, plenty of whom have disappointed. Another full summer of recruitment and implementing his methods and he can have no more excuses if it doesn't work. Results wise, it can obviously be argued it is going fine with us just off the playoffs, but performance wise it needs to change, we have to bring in some pace and creativity, and we have to attack games more, especially away.

Sonupe causing trouble down the left. Nice work from him in the build up to the goal, with a nice finish curled in from the edge of the area from Gibson.
