Electronic turnstiles

I wrote a post criticising the switch to electronic turnstiles on here last week and was called an old Grandad for doing so. Would anyone else who, like me, was stuck in a queue with dozens for the two turnstiles in operation, care to comment?

The problem is we have gone from 9 turnstiles* to 3 (and one was out of order Saturday) so 2 in operation, that simply can’t cope with what.... avg 1000 on the east.

It wasn't great on Saturday. It certainly wasn't getting people through as fast as Aiden Cheevers would have!

Seems a bit like the "self check-outs" system at the moment which still requires staff and is slower than the older system!

Whilst I still expect teething problems like any new system, I still maintain that people in the long queue would’ve been a lot more appeased if they were told by a steward what the delay was due to.

I go to the Oval regularly for cricket (obviously) and they have people with hand scanners letting people in.

Is this system, with the barriers being non-manned, a money saving exercise too far? Or could they do a combination, have a couple of bods with scanners in case of a dodgy print out, etc?

They have people there helping you scan. And they can press a button at the top of the gates to let you through when the ticket isn't scanning properly.

Not sure why such long queues yesterday, it's quicker than if you paid at a manned turnstile and about the same if you already have a ticket at a manned turnstile.

So it must have been simply down to the fact only 2 out of 3 or 4 were working and the sheer number of people turning up at the same time.

Doesn't help that the ones under the East Terrace aren't in use.

There definitely aren't enough electronic turnstiles, especially without the ones under the middle of the stand being in use.

The thing is, the entire process is slower for the customer. If you already have a ticket, it's about the same amount of time to use a scanner as it was to use the manned turnstile. If you don't, you have to make a separate journey to the ticket office and back again, which takes far longer than just buying a ticket on the gate.

That's true. And more so for those who have north stand season tickets so should be easy but have to exchange at the club shop first. Don't know why they can't just make the north stand season tickets work on all turnstiles whilst the north stand is out of action.

Completely agree.

My suspicion is it's due to all West Stand seats being allocated, but no reason that those going in East shouldn't be able to just scan their card on the gate.

Takes me 30 seconds to buy online.

Scan my phone on entry.

Couldn't be easier or quicker.

And it saves the club staffing turnstiles and provides them with a lot of usable customer pattern data.

Sorry, yes, forgot about ability to buy online. Would still argue that it's just as quick to buy and enter from a manned turnstile. You're right of course about it saving the club from employing turnstile staff, although I don't necessarily see that as a positive (saves a bit of money, maybe enough for a bit of one players weekly wages, but takes away a link to the club for those who worked them).

And I would still question the use of that data. I'm sure they've got loads of it with the changes in ticket buying processes over the last few years, but how has it helped the club to increase ticket sales? Attendances have been down year-on-year recently. Will more data from having electronic turnstiles be able to help with that?

Bar wasn't particularly busy at 2:45 when we left, although everyone had to walk the long way round. I think the printer breaking at 2:30 created the queue plus the late walk up from the academy and the closure of 1/3 of the turnstiles.

I like to think it created the illusion that we are massive and popular. Brits love a good queue. Marketing genius.

. Passers-by seeing a queue must've thought 'that mut be brilliant, I'll join it, or I'll check it out next home game'

That's the problem with e-tickets. Needs to be scanned to prove it is valid / genuine / unused.

If you are going to rely on this technology though then a back up solution is needed. I didn't realise there were o ly two turnstiles now for the east... Are the ones on the halfway line no longer in use?

I think there will be a couple underneath the middle of the stand, but certainly not open yet.

I still maintain that the switch to electronic turnstiles is/was a mistake, but one seemingly easy solution to yesterday's issues would be to have handheld scanners that stewards can use to scan people in through the floodgate when there's a queue.

Yep. Today only 2 of them in use, for entire stand (compared to almost a dozen manned turnstiles in previous seasons). I started queueing there at 2.50, didn't get in until 3.05. had already queued for 10 minutes in club shop to pick up my 'complimentary' ticket as a North Stand season ticket holder.

Hopefully next season they’ll be in full working order.

Get with the times granddad 😉

Edit: FWIW, when I’ve had to queue to get in, the queues have been caused by people not having the ability to scan a bar code, and adults trying to use kids tickets.
