Sampsons Turn Around

By Boromatt14/10 10:05Mon Oct 14 10:05:23 2019

What a relief Saturday's win was. It was such a Boro win too, under the cosh for the last 10 minutes, nail biting stuff. Just wish we could win easily. However, a huge win and really our season has properly started now.

Had a few discussions with people about the amount of work and change that Mark has instilled in the football club over such a short period of time. Thought I'd note a few points:

* Improvement on the quality of football.

Since Mark has been put in the hot seat, the team have started to play more attractive football. Rather than the "hoofball" that we saw for the first 7 games, it seems he has worked very hard on the training pitch to utilise the quality we have in the team. IMO I think the division has improved over the years and there's many players in the league that have been playing in the leagues above. You've got to be able to get the ball down and play, which Mark has identified.

* Goals output.

After no goals scored early into the season, in Marks tenure we've seen 6 goals in the league which is over half the amount of our tally which is 10. Cowley and Guthrie forming a partnership which is growing week by week, both scoring goals. Something which I find is very important is the midfield getting on the scoresheet. When the players up top do go through rough patches of form, if the midfield are always dipping in with goals it take that little bit of pressure off.

*Shots output.

Something which was dissapointing at the start of the season, the amount of shots we were having in games. Under Mark, just take a look at some of the shots stats we've had in games. For example, 19 against Northampton, 20 against Cambridge. Being positive with the ball and having confidence to go forward and test the keeper.

*A care towards the players and supporters.

To me, it's quite evident that the players respect and love Mark. The interviews with Kurtis and other players expressing their desire to do well under Mark. Seeing how he is with the players right after a match, the passion which oozes off him in interviews when speaking about the players. All things which as a player will make you go and run through brick walls for the man. But, also the care he has shown towards us supporters. Reaching out on Social media, being fully involved in the community. For example, Academy Day and also our charity football match in December. It just shows how the littlest of things can go so far.

I've been shot down for sticking up for the man. But, considering the amount of time he's had in the role, I think his doing brilliantly. Hopefully with Steve Coppell the both of them can take our football club forwards for many seasons ahead. Looking forward to the back to back away games before a huge month in November. The players can now play with freedom rather than having that monkey on our backs, with no win and can try and build on the 8 points that we've accumilated. Another couple of wins would be lovely!

Thoughts?

Matt, as much as I admire your optimism surely your getting a bit carried away after our one and only league win this season where we were still hanging on at the end, i’d rather be a bit more cautious and see where we are at in another 5 or 6 games.

Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the Boro years have gone by. Every now and then I get a little bit terrified. And then I see the look in Sampson’s eyes... bright eyes!

Every now and then we fall apart!

I expect us to fall apart again at some point but every turn around is good as far as I’m concerned. Hope we keep it going. COYB

It was only later his 'not guilty' finding for a badly judged attempt at humour which had racist connotations was (rightly) overturned on the balance of probabilities.

Same as my post was viewed by someone as being insensitive / offensive and therefore (rightly) removed, irrespective of the intent of the post. (I thought it was funny).

I am not immune from offending people with a different offence threshold than me.

We were under the cosh because of poor substitutions on our part. Almost hitting the self-destruct button doesn’t constitute a “Boro win” for me personally.

One thing I do like to see is a team that takes shots, in the past we’ve been guilty of not having a go sometimes. Finding the balance between not losing possession through needlessly shooting and not being afraid to have a crack at goal is important and probably a very fine line.

A win in the league is good, not getting ahead of myself that Sampson is the saviour just yet though. If we’d have played dire football in his games in charge but got a couple more wins I’d be happier than one win and playing it about a bit more.

The simple fact was, with only Kurtis up top surrounded by 3 defenders he stood no chance. Any passes out from defence to him were picked up by those defenders every time. Grimsby found it easy to play it straight back into our 1/3.

It sounded like Sampsons instructions were not adhered to. The players seemed to press the panic button and felt they all needed to defend. Whereas we could have afforded 2 up top to take the pressure off.

With this win they will gain more confidence.

Lovely to get that win though, phew.

It was nice to get a win. Finally.

The way we saw it out did not fill me with confidence, but hopefully the increase confidence of back to back wins will enable us to improve on this in the future. Certainly we'll need too, because second halves like that will cost us points against better teams (as we've seen).

Watts to RB wasn't great last time he tried it in fairness. Too left footed.

I'd have moved Timlin there maybe.

Either way we needed a right sided midfielder to help out. Which didn't happen.

Watts struggled against Colchester at right back. He is left footed.

Was that to do with his feet or to do with the terrible protection from the midfield in front of him (a recurring theme)?

He seems to have good positioning and is solid in the air, so I'd be surprised if it was a position he couldn't handle with the correct team structure around him.
