I honestly dont know how many more games I can be bothered to get up and watch.

We are absolutely dreadful.

We have absolutely no plan when we have possession other than just bombing it forward and hoping that Guthrie or Cowley can get on the end and force something from nothing.

What is the fucking point in playing 5 in midfield if we are just going to bypass the entire midfield?

We show absolutely ZERO urgency to win the ball back, which would be fine if when we did eventually win the ball, we held on to possession, or were at least smart with it, but we just boot it away. It's like we don't actually want the ball.

I've tried to be patient and give it a chance to come together, but it just isnt getting any better and I have absolutely no idea what our playing style/tactics are meant to be.

I agree with that for the first half but last 15 minutes or so we did really well I thought. I can't stand Timlin and Denton isn't very good defensively but other than that happy with the rest.

Edit: just seen your other post, so yes agreed.

It all changed when I shouted "Just pass the fucking ball".

That was precisely when we started trying to pass the fucking ball, and dominated the last 15. Don't know why Sampson didn't say that, what with his coaching badges and everything.

CMS was good, right call to sub Cowley.

I'd have also bought Byrom on for Timlin or Watts to try and get some decent passes going and hold onto the ball better. (Assuming Parrett wasn't fit enough to come on, I can't see any other reason why we didn't introduce him).

Good to see TVC back, looked really good.

Denton was ignored first 15-20, everything was down the other side, but when he did get the ball he tried to do things, one of his best performances going forward. Although even he annoyed me twice when he played a short pass to CMS who then returned it to complete the 1-2 only to find Denton had stopped, so wasn't where the ball was played.

Guthrie, despite not winning much in the air was very good when he got the ball down, great feet. Thought he'd missed the penalty, luckily right side of the post.

Woeful defending for their goal, time and time again we failed to close down their wide players and they got balls across the six yard line or crosses in.

In truth the first 75 was extremely poor, treated the ball like a grenade, everyone just got rid. Except Carter who tried to carry it but almost always lost it.

Timlin has the first touch of a trampoline, anything more than a slow pass and it just bounces off him. Always chasing the action, doesn't read the play and get into position, he reacts to the play. His only saving grace is that he can tackle and has a decent engine.

We never kept players wide enough, on that pitch we should have got Denton running on the wing far more.

Superb one handed reaction save from Farman kept us in the game.

Ref was clueless, he was guessing half the time. We got decisions that were never fouls, so did Vale. Not often both sets of fans slate the ref.

And the all day breakfast was poor, but that's Sev's fault, not Sampson's.

The positive is that we'd have probably lost that earlier in the season, and we finished very strongly.

CMS was rubbish for first 10 minutes he played. First touch was about 6 feet from him, kept giving it away and passed to a sub warming up.

But then got into it and did well for the final 15, linking up short passes etc

Byrom should be statting ahead of Timlin. Timlin thinks he is better than he is and as a result, underhits passes, tries too complicated things, doesn't look around, gets caught out and generally just pisses me off.

Denton isnt good defensively, but OK going forward.

Also

A) I never recommended the pub, I just said I go there.
B) I certainly didnt say order an all day breakfast
C) you got free parking didn't ya?

Yep, bottom of the league still, that proves that Timlin has contributed so much to the improvements in our results....

I would agree that Boro's performances have improved under Sampson but this has little to do with Timlin.

We are more solid at the back and at times more menacing up front.

Midfield is our achilles heel still.

The point I'm trying to make.... Timlin is part of our weak midfield, a good physical player but his touch and passing leaves a lot to be desired. Timlin is not the only midfield player, although I am picking him out, the whole midfield is not that great.

In no way has his presence in the team been the inspiration for our better performances.

There are other players Farman, Nugent, Guthrie, Cowley, to name just a few, that have found a new lease of life under Sampson.

Edit:- Let's see what happens at the next home match..I sincerely hope the midfield gels and becomes the engine room to get us victory.

"a good physical player but his touch and passing leaves a lot to be desired"

Notts Forest's Kenny Burns was told by the great Brian Clough to "stop trying to play football son, just stop the opposition, win the ball and pass it to a player (Robinson/o'Neil) who can play".

I see Timlin sort of in that role and we have improved since he arrived back in the team. Now we need a couple of midfield players alongside who can provide a decent telling pass (well to a decent L2 standard pass anyway).

But we pay our money and are entitled to be critical on the Information superhighway. Otherwise this place would be extremely dull, (or even more dull). It's an opinion forum, not a cheerleaders orgy.

Sev never boos or abuses players at games (that I've heard).

He doesn't go stupid with ongoing abuse or scapegoating on here, unlike some.

And I think he's 90% right about Timlin.

I think I've gone OTT slagging Guthrie off in the past too, but I am fair, when I feel they've done well I will say so too (across various platforms).

I hated the Timlin Byrom partnership last year and when it was announced Timlin had gone I think I posted thank fuck and then he comes back! Better than Iontton if we are looking at positives.

What do I know though, many seem to rate him.

Agreed, if Timlin can play to his strength and get a straight forward, nothing fancy pass to a play-maker then that is the midfield sorted.

If Port Vale have the ball on the right (our left), our left wing back should be stepping up and covering the wide area, not back alongside the back 3 covering their right wing forward. The left sided centre back should be covering the right wing forward. Otherwise we have absolutely zero coverage on the left side of midfield and you might as well not have wing backs.

At the moment we are just playing sort of attack minded full backs, not wing backs.

I've seen before that Samson can get a team playing good football and playing with solid tactics, so I wonder whether the current group of players are just not good enough to do anything other than boot it forward.
