They are probably right (edit: not seen the penalty incident) but it worked for both sides. After the penalty they got a lot of soft decision themselves. And that's not the reason they didn't win so you don't focus in it in a report.

It was the sort of ref who gave a foul for any contact so we learnt to fall over when touched. Clever. Shield the ball and wait for a player to come in.

Although I wasn't there, and can't comment authoritatively. the commentary team said it was soft but the ref had already spoken to the offending player about it a few minutes earlier, as well as penalising us for the same offence earlier. If players won't learn quickly how a ref is handling a game that's their problem.
