Go Strong?

By Baldock (BALDOCKBORO)18/1 22:53Sat Jan 18 22:53:56 2020

Given we are a couple of games from Wembley and momentum is important, do we go strong against Exeter?

Or is our league position/future too important to put our core players at unnecessary risk?

I'd play virtually none of the players we think look like starting on Saturday, accepting that it almost certainly ends our Cup run.

I'd use it to let the fringe players make a case for not being on the cull list.

(And not because I dislike the tainted Trophy)

Well this will work wonders for our confidence.

Could be worse, Exeter could've played a strong side and really spanked us.

Not sure we're allowed to play with 12 players.

Denton is suspended too.

Westley teams in the past were at their best in midweek games when opponents weren't quite up full stength.
We're the huge underdogs, a full stength squad loss and the confidence is still high after rolling over Cambridge. Let's go for that Wembley spot. Winning only helps the cause. COYB

Agree. If you don't approach each game on a want-to-win basis you shouldn't be playing the game in the first place.

I'd go strong. Leaving out only players who are not fit or capable of putting in the required energy levels. So possibly a few changes to freshen things up.

Plymouth is going to be a hard game regardless and perhaps one you wouldnt immediately think win. Games against Grimsby and Orient should be targeted more.

We've gone strong in almost every game in it thus far and can now almost touch Wembley. Plus have another £50k if we win.

After today's result I would be stunned if we play a weak side. Had we not had today I could maybe see it a bit less, but think we will feel the boost of today will lift our league campaign so will go very strong and trust we don't get injuries.

Will be a very tough game regardless of our team.

I think they will. Think everybody will now they are just two games from Wembley.

For a bit of fun, name the side you would play and I'll tell you whether it would fulfil the criteria and if we could indeed go with it.

Farman (shouldn't be tired)

Denton TVC (FBs)

Soares Fernández (CBs)

Carter Timlin (CM)

Kennedy CMS (Wide)

Taylor

Guthrie

4-4-1-1 or similar - not sure if Soares is eligible yet or CMS fit?

But then I don't really care if we are knocked out beyond the money element.

I don't want Lakin or Dabo injured or suspended for the important game Satdi.

I think CMS is injured, but I wouldn't risk him anyway.

Exeter have played a very weakened side every game so far in this competition, as they focus on automatic promotion. Whether they will tomorrow, who knows?

But our league status is too important to risk IMO.

Works hard, experienced pro. Was involved in a relegation battle last season (though maybe that’s best not thought about considering how it ended up). In his interview on re-signing he said GW has faith in him. Definitely a useful player to have around the place. Certainly has something to offer still.

Useful yes. There's a gap in my mind between 'useful' and must be protected from a mid-week cup game.

He wouldn't make my best starting 11, and on that basis is a perfect candidate for the mid-week cup game in face!

Edit: I have just remembered that I said during the Bristol Rovers game that Denton is suspended though as he picked up his second booking, so he cannot play in your lineup above.

Didn't say it was a strong team but its the strongest I could come up with without risking the 11 I'd start Satdi.

Wouldn't count as it is players who started, not in the squad. And the keeper doesn't count anymore, just outfield players.

However the rules are very relaxed now to the extent it is very hard to break them.
