Yeah... Thats not quite what he's saying is it? Though it is typical of the slant that is put on everything when the team isn't doing well. Personally, I find the 'mark all as read button' very useful this season.

By negative does he mean people saying that the players are shit, or actual abusive messages?

Because I don’t see any problem with calling them out for being shit. If it’s personal abuse then that’s just wrong.

I avoid walking into the path of a speeding truck because I know I'm not going to like how it ends up. Maybe players should leave forums alone for the same reason. Just don't read them. I know that's a bit simplistic but when you're struggling at the wrong end of the table, it's highly likely the comments aren't all going to be sunshine and light. Just my point of view on it for what it's worth.

This is a bad take.

I get what you're saying right, maybe there is something in saying maybe the players should leave forums and social media for the good of their mental health. There's something in saying that for all of us. Thing is, that's far too simple an answer, and it's simplicity is why it's a bad take.

There is a fine line to tread between criticism and abuse, and most people (myself included) have crossed the line from time to time. A player shouldn't have to fear opening twitter because he didn't play to his usual standard in the last game. Nor should someone fear looking on Borochat because someone's decided they need to take the players down a peg or two. They're already down.

If you’re a professional athlete then you should know full well that fans are going to discuss your performances online, be it on forums or on social media. If you can’t take that in your stride then either get a new job or don’t look on the fans forum. As for social media, have a private account so that only the people you choose to see your content can see it. Even to the point of using a different username/handle so that you can’t be found by the few fans who would be stupid enough to @ you in their criticisms. If you google or search for yourself on social networks then do so in the knowledge that you might find criticism and vitriolic content. Or just don’t do it, it’s not worth it for an ego boost.

If you don’t want to be criticised then don’t choose a life as a professional sportsperson.

The line between criticism and abuse isn’t that thin at all. Calling someone a shit footballer is criticism, albeit not constructive, calling someone a shit person (because of what they do on the football pitch and for no other reason) is abuse.

I think the line should be whether it's @ at them or whether you have to name search yourself. The former, is unavoidable (no one should feel obliged to come off social media, although I'd probably ditch it in their position), the latter is more earwigging conversations (although still say abuse would be out of order) as people rightly chat about football on Twitter or wherever.

Yep.

I have no issue in honestly discussing a player and their performances. Or any person, for that matter. But I don't believe I have ever tagged a player into such a criticism (happy to be corrected).

That is the difference. One is discussing what we all see with each other as if in Stripes after a game (which is how I view this place and Twitter) and the player needn't see it, the other is going out of your way to almost ensure they do see it.

I think it's more likely Twitter, when they get tagged into tweets and can't really avoid them.

And maybe Instagram and FB but I don't get how they work really, because I'm a luddite.

If they come on here, they're fucking stupid.

If they search their name on Twitter etc. after a poor game, they're fucking stupid.

Fans are human and passionate (and many of us are thick) and will often, vent their frustrations quite colourfully in very blunt terms.

when they get tagged into tweets

It always irritates me when anyone tags a player or celebrity in a critical tweet as if a) they'd say it to their face or b) it adds anything of any value to Twitter or whatever social platform it is.

Then again, that's how Twitter's now gone and that's why it's rubbish. Just a co-ordinated pile-on.

Yeah coming here is like walking into the supporter's bar after a match, there's going to be an ongoing exchange of views.

Twitter/Insta is more like being able to pick up the blower and scream directly at a player. Using them actively gives power to others (too much for my liking).

What I will say is that you're a massive twat if you @ a player into a conversation on Twitter, etc. slagging them off. Then they don't have to go looking for it. Poor form, that.
