Revell's First Game

By Sev21/2 19:28Fri Feb 21 19:28:14 2020

I wonder how many player managers we have had?
Can't be too many.

Anyway, I was thinking about the game tomorrow and that it is pretty much the ideal fixture to start with.

Not at home, so no home crowd tension or expectation.
Relatively nearby for an away trip.
A full week preparation.
Against a small team like ourselves so no inferiority complex.
In a small ground so no sense of big occasion.
Against a side that aren't incredible
At a place where our record isn't terrible. (I think)

So all in all, a lot going for us.

Up the Revs.

Won 14 of 28 games against them.

And won six of 12 proper away games against them, including two of the last three.

He has. He made reference to them in the interview on SG1 Radio.

I think you have to have done badges to a certain level (presumably Level 3/UEFA B) to be eligible even as a coach in the Football League.

Nope, UEFA B is enough unless you want to be in International / European

I've done my one day (free from McDonalds) course. I'd imagine I could do the B licence exams without the course, I've watched loads of football and frequently shout incisive comments including, but not exclusive to:
'Shoulder'
'Push up'
'Get rid'
And
'For fucks sake Kurtis, try running'

Flailing your arms about relentlessly at nothing, putting your arm up and massively exaggerating tapping the watch, clapping when asked by the fans to give a wave, and making sure to applaud the fans at FT with your arms as high above your head as is possible to achieve, seems to work on our fanbase.

"I'd imagine I could do the B licence exams without the course."

There's no 'exam' per se. It's a one day assessment. You're given a coaching topic (shooting, long passing, etc.. mine was defending) and then you're watched while you give a 1 hour session which has to include various elements (that you learn about during the course).

It's 5 full days of learning, then you have about 12-weeks where you are supposed to keep a log of all the sessions you have run with the team you coach. You then go back for two days for the assessment (each person gets 1 hour to coach the rest of the group as if they were their team).

It's not complicated, but I don't think you could just rock up and pass. There's a pretty set structure that you have to follow and certain components that you are expected to include (and a bunch of other things that you're penalised for doing). I didn't actually complete my log book, because I wasn't actually coaching a team at the time (I did my course while I was back from Canada for a few months, and the team I had been coaching was in Canada). I was allowed to essentially 'plan' 12 sessions that showed progression, rather than making a log of what I actually did.

Level 3 / UEFA B is a bit more complicated. There's no definitive time frame, as far as I know. You have to do a LOT more paperwork, draw up all your drills and session plans, and show an advanced knowledge of coaching. Admittedly, it's not rocket science, but you have to show knowledge of how to coach certain elements that are significantly more complex than simply shooting, passing, defending, etc (such as patterns of play, playing between the lines, counter attacking).

The main issue with the courses is that beyond Level 2, they're fucking expensive. They mentioned on the radio that Revs did one of his badges (presumably Level 3 or 4) through the Welsh FA instead of the English FA. The Welsh (and basically any other country that isn't England) FA offer the same courses for substantially less, plus they're not as oversubscribed so they're easier to get onto.

I'm currently doing the paperwork to do my Provincial B licence in Canada. It probably won't be worth the paper it's written on outside of Canada, but it's the only courses on offer unless I fly back to England or go through the US system (which I suspect probably isn't much better than Canada's). The plus side is that I'm getting my courses paid for through the club I coach for.

You know I was joking when I suggested I could rock up and pass... I haven't got a clue.

Got a mate who's done his B and A, and is waiting for a club to pay for his Pro licence. The cost of the A and Pro in England is astronomical.

He did his in Ireland and Sweden and the A still cost several thousand.

Looking back, I should have. For some reason, despite directly quoting you, I thought you meant Level 2. Which is often considered easy because of how easy Level 1 is.

I have absolutely no idea why it's so expensive in England compared to everywhere else, other than because it's a cash grab. It's embarrassing that English coaches have to go elsewhere to do their courses. Especially when they complain about the poor quality of coaching at grass roots level.

In Canada - admittedly they aren't UEFA courses - I think they're in the hundreds, even for the National A licence. Much more reasonable.

Unfortunately, you’re probably not. It’s such a fine line between downbeat and realistic, I find. I wish we didn’t have to be or sound downbeat, for that is not where I want to be, but I think continuing to pin any hope on our position is becoming ludicrous. We don’t have the... whatever it is. Players? Management? Chairman? Belief? I don’t know. But what we DO have is that terminal cancer that many relegated teams have, where nothing goes right no matter what you try. Bad luck pops up at inconvenient moments, managers are spun in endless desperation, the fans SO WANT to believe in a miracle that will never come. That’s the story of relegation and we are living it. I fear that if we don’t make some astonishingly good appointments next year, we will flounder again. I’d love to be cheerier about all this - really I would - but I don’t think it’s a realistic ask. 👍

I think it all depends on the style in which we go down if we do go down that will be the deciding factor in whether Revs is at the helm come August. If we go down with a fight and he shows he knows his onions then I’d like to think he’ll be given the backing to make a go of getting us back up. If he keeps us up from here then he deserves the job, that goes without saying.

Stevenage have been relegated twice in their current guise, 1987-88 and 2013-14. With a third one looming never have I known so much animosity between Boro fans.

For all of the debates we have amongst ourselves, the blame we place on the Chairman, players, managers, badges, kits, sponsors we must remember WE STILL HAVE A CLUB.

I for one have not been very kind to PW but all he has done, right or wrong, has been with our club’s best interest at heart.

PW must be dipping into his pocket every hour of every day to keep this club on an even keel…he is not perfect, nobody is. What must he be thinking now?

Whatever happens “we go again” as we still have a club.

So...show our togetherness as we have shown already by #stevenageforleaguefootball and now show our PASSION PRIDE & AMBITION.
