Music Stevenage have run out to

Good morning everyone,

I hope this okay to post here, moderators please move or delete if you need to.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Stevenage have run out to, for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Stevenage ran out to this
. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know! We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Cheers

Joe

For years we ran out to ‘when the going gets tough’. Life was ruined for all of us when this was displaced by some other filth but I still sing it at full volume when the boys jog out for the latest defeat.

Red Light Spells Danger by Billy Ocean, in the 1980s. I could have imagined all of this and it could have been When the Going Gets Tough. I bloody hope I'm right though, cos Red Light is a banger.

I’m almost 100% certain they ran out to When the Going Gets Tough!

Edit: it may have been coming out of the steel cage tunnel for the start or it may have been a half time thing on the tannoy but I’m certain that song was a feature for a long time at Broadhall Way in the 80s/early 90s

Saw Billy Ocean in Disneyland Florida about five years ago - doing 3 free gigs a day in the Epcot park, about 50 people watching when we stopped.

He still had a cracking vocal range, did about 6-8 songs, and despite him not being remotely my cup of tea, I knew all the songs and lots of the words.

And he wandered round chatting afterwards. Got a photo somewhere on an old phone.

He's quite short.

First time I ever heard Slade's 'Cum On Feel The Noize' was at a Stevenage Athletic match against Wellingborough Town in 1973. First match I ever went to. Funny how things like that stick in your mind.

Funnily enough, that used to be played quite regularly after a defeat as the way out music.

I can't provide any real insight, I think we used to run out to Pirates of the Caribbean once about 5 years ago?

What I would ask however, and I mean no disrespect, is haven't you got something more useful to society to be researching?

I do remember we used to run on to Gary Glitter in the mid-90s.

Can't remember if it was The Leader of the Gang (I Am), or Rock N'Roll Pt.2. I'm not imagining that am I, as I do remember 'when it all came out' thinking to myself that they will need to change the intro music at Boro.
