Thanks, Owen.

What a load of guff that interview was. The only thing we didn't get for our post-match interview bingo card was "I just can't put my finger on it." Although maybe its a well known fact that those are famous last words.

EDIT: One thing I did agree with - Pett is obviously a class above everyone else. As much as I went on about how he isn't a central midfielder, I actually think having him in CM (or AM) is our best option right now. We need him on the ball regularly and that won't happen with him playing out wide.

Who, right now, do you think is better in our squad?

I never really liked Pett when he was here last time, and I didn't like the idea of him coming back, but he has been very good for us in the few games he's played. He hasn't taken any time to get up to speed (which was a potential question mark with him having not played for so long) and has made me question the ability of all the other players in the squad (rather than it simply being a tactical thing). Carter is a great example. I thought he was decent. Pett has made him look amateur, by comparison.

Well as you've said, there wasn't much wailing and gnashing of teeth when he left, even though he had his fans.

He is our best player now, but he shouldn't be. We don't know how much blame Revs takes for that. But having worked with these players, I'd hope there'd be at least one Revs thought could be coached to rival a guy walking in cold through the door. It seems a terminal lack of self-confidence to me.

Pett was never a favourite of mine before either, went missing and didn't track back consistently enough.

He has matured and learnt a lot in his league career. Don't forget we picked him out of non league at Potters Bar didn't we?

Yes he's our best outfield player.

Is he that good or are too many of the rest just so far off the required standard and making him look good.

I think the thing to ask here is whether Pett is better than he was when we let him go or are the other players around him that much worse.

I always had him down as an honest, hard-working player and he had the onus on him to be our immediate replacement for Luke Freeman. He didn’t kick on as we thought/hoped he might and there was the fannying around with him in the middle. By the time he left I wasn’t fussed.

I was glad to see him return however, he can be a good first team regular in League Two undoubtedly. Right now he seems to be the focal point though and that concerns me.

Always liked him, didn't want him to go, glad he is back, probably of a similar standard, but more experienced now and playing with players who are not as good as the old lot.

I think Pett always got criticised because people were comparing him to their expectations rather than his teammates. Like you wouldn't criticise an average player for playing average because you accept he is average, but you criticise Pett for playing average because you think he should be Freeman (not you specifically, the royal 'you').

Thats very true. When he came from Wealdstone he came with a pretty big reputation (by non-league standards), and our expectations were probably too high. This time round, I was expecting more of what we had before, and have been pleasantly surprised.

Perspective is funny.

Definitely, he stepped up three tiers and was the heir to Freeman’s throne. He was on a hiding to nothing in some ways but he did a good job. We made the play-offs with some proper cloggers like Andy Bond that season.

I actually think that season was the last one I had any enjoyment out of as a fan as well, granted this is a tangent. And we were awful for the first half of it too. I’d probably go as far as to say the day we found out that Westley 3.0 was over was the day I lost some of my passion for the club and it hasn’t returned fully since.

Agree on that last point. That was a major turning point for me. We had a bad season and a half in league one, under Smith and Westley, and then the bad half season back in league two under Westley, but it genuinely seemed like we had turned a corner and were at the start of an upward trajectory again. And then Big Bad Baz fucked everything up, and it's been fucking awful since, with some mildly enjoyable parts thrown in.

There have been bright spots since GW 3 but they have been fleeting. That move to give Westley the elbow after taking a rag tag bunch to the play-offs, love him or hate him, was a big middle finger up at the fans for me. One that I’ve still not fully forgiven the club for.

He's right, we do have to work with what we've got.

“I don’t think we ever really care too much about clubs’ reputations. Games get won by the 11 players that play any football match on any day. They don’t get won by the size of your history, the size of your fanbase, or the size of your wage bill, they’re won by the size of the hearts, the cleverness of the brains and the strength of the legs in the players on the day.”

Good for Revs. There's plenty of other factors as well as an inexperienced management set-up for why we've been so bad.

Some of the strikers are absolute guff. Annoyingly, our best centre forward is out for 8 weeks.

Bad workman blames his tools. No pun intended on the tools bit.

Glad this didn't go under the radar. Quite possibly the most incredible interview from a Stevenage manager and yet presented as if nothing major was said.

I disagree too. I think we have enough quality in the squad and players capable of staying up. As a manager you need to be a) convincing them they are good enough and b) having a game plan that allows them to flourish/prosper.

For example if you have got inferior players use the dark arts, don't try to outplay the opposition.

Because they have a mortgage to pay? Managers would be interested in the job. They would also be interested in the fact that expectations are rock bottom and they can't really fail.

I have said before and still believe that there are some good players in that team, just set up badly.

I have to disagree Sev. There's lots of jobs about to come up.
Hurst for example was favourite at one point for the Tranmere job. He'd wait for that job to go to someone else before showing his hand here.
McGreal is localish and a right hard bastard, exactly what we need, so you'd think he'd be in by now. He's probably still on severance from Colchester. Would he want a relegation on his CV after a couple of very steady seasons there.

If what I heard the Cowleys still take from Huddersfield per week is true, we wouldn't pay a quarter of that.

You have to say that quarter of a million to stay up is probably worth it. No?

Yeah managers with plenty of experience (in demand) or on a kushty pay off will of course wait.

I mean someone starting out. Like Sarll took the opportunity. Even Sheringham thought why not.

If Revell had said no, when would he next get a chance to manage a FL club? Possibly never.
