Is our squad that bad?

By BedsBoro22/11/2020 23:45Sun Nov 22 23:45:30 2020

Don't know why I'm doing this to myself on a Sunday night but I can't be alone in thinking our current squad isn't as bad as a lot of our fans - and worryingly our manager - seem to think?

Cumming - highly rated keeper by all accounts and looks decent

Cuthbert, Prosser, Coker - all decent, experienced players who should be above bottom of L2 level, particularly considering Prosser captained a good team last year in this league.

LJW - seemingly always rated well statistically although personally I don't think he's up too much. TVC and Hutton should be more than adequate backups.

Osborne + Carter - both sought after in the summer, both shown flashes of being good players. I'm assuming Read is good by virtue of not being released by Brentford although haven't seen much of that.

Pett + List - both have played at a higher level than the shit end of L2 and again have shown talent in flashes. Pett looks significantly better than he did the last time round although that's probably because he's had some actual coaching.

Effiong, Newton, Aitchinson, Oteh etc - a mix of highly rated at lower level, where we have historically bought some of our best players from, highly rated by their parent clubs and/or fans or have proved they can score at this level in the past.

That's easily more than a starting XI and I refuse to believe the current squad we have is incapable of playing better than it currently is, which is essentially what Revell implied yesterday. It's a manager's - and his staff - job to improve and coach players and make them better - look at what Bielsa has done at Leeds to what was a fairly average bunch of players. While we're obviously not going to get anything like Bielsa, or Cowley, it's pretty sad that we've gone from 'Passion, Pride, Ambition'  and punching above our weight to going 'oh well we don't have a strong squad and had a tough summer, what do you expect.' If these players have shown potential or talent in the past then a good manager should be able to make them at least competent again. Look at some of the shit that GW worked with.

Saying all this is still pointless because we seem incapable of hiring a decent manager who could coach and improve players but good to get off my chest at least.

Two goals against a Sunday League team and a penalty that should have been saved (and doesn't really count for the purposes of discussing our ability to score goals)...

Only discussing the league here.

Scored against Colchester, Morecambe and Bolton. Three games in a row.

I didn't know penalties didn't count as goals.

I didn't say they don't. But not exactly useful when assessing our ability to score goals. Don't be facetious.

Just fed up of everybody being so fucking depressive about everything on here and not even looking for any slight positives in anything.

Maybe it's time for a FLOUNCE.

Somebody's crunched the numbers and worked out we have seven goals less than we should have scored, and that's when we've hardly been dominating games. Wouldn't be enough to move us away from trouble though.

I'm not so sure it is. After 13 games we are in exactly the same position in the table, with the same number of points and the same record (won 1, drawn 5, lost 7)

We've scored far fewer but also conceded fewer this season

The sum total is always more important than the individual pieces. I think that’s part of where we have been going wrong for a while now.

Can it be managed better? Yes. But the problems are deeper rooted than simply changing the manager I fear.

I agree, 75% of our squad could drop into a decent team above us with an actual experienced manager and look good getting promoted. The lack of coaching, self confidence and tactics at our club is ruining them at the minute

Very few people called Anthony Grant shit.

The problem with him is his incessant diving and cheating.

Edit: Not to detract from your point, which is very much correct.

I hated him. Mainly for that. He'd have the ball at feet when he should have run with it, passed it, or cleared it, but invited a tackle to win a free kick

The worst kind of footballer. A fraud some would say

Football doesn't help itself though when players do try and stay on their feet and don't get given could. Doesn't encourage honest behaviour!
