Asif Kapadia film Maradona is epic. Free on one of the channels on my telly, and handy to watch if you are fortunate and WFH. Might have another watch

I enjoyed the film Desperately Seeking Susan, every thing else was crap - Except like a Virgin by Doreen.

Too young to have seen him play, I remember him mostly for his sliding belly flop celebration here: https://youtu.be/iDumd4wFBTM
Staying up late to watch this on Sky was a great experience.
Context:
- Having played shit throughout qualifying under his management, Argentina had to win to stand much chance of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup automatically
- It went from not raining to the pitch becoming unplayable in the second half, and by 80 minutes the camera lenses were so wet you could hardly see anything
- Peru equalised in the 89th minute
- The guy who scored the winner had been brought back by Maradona after ten years out, like if Southgate brings back Andy Carroll for 2022 qualifying
- Whilst the celebrations are still being replayed Peru hit the bar with a shot direct from the restart

Shame.
Who knew years of living to excess, drugs and alcohol could fuck you up so much.
Drugs are bad kids.

Massive shame. If he gets his tactics right this can be a turning point though and he can come back from the dead.

Can't say I'm too gutted by his passing. He was a cheat and more importantly a cheat against us.

Admittedly no English footballer has ever cheated, so the moral high ground is yours, but do take a look at the second goal some time

You have to wonder what would have happened if one of the defenders would have put in a challenge, or the midfield tracked back to defend.

The midfield did track back; he beat Peter Reid 18* times in one run.
*Rudy Giuliani counted for me.

Ahh, good pub quiz question this... I wouldn't think it would've been Shilts, he's still spitting teeth to this day. Peter Reid as we've mentioned him?

Probably explains Shilton's tax avoidance and drink driving conviction. Nobody's perfect though.

Lino was well positioned, ref was a little un sighted by Maradona's hair.
I watched it live and didn't call it straight away.
Given the quality of TV pictures, let alone slow-mo replays it wasn't until the papers printed the pictures that I was sure he cheated. Long after he scored that rather special second.
Looking back, if Simon Heslop was on the pitch, that second wouldn't have happened. Wallop. Yellow card. Done.
Shouldn't complain however, the officials gave us the benefit of the doubt in '66.

Do you know, I've never seen the second goal Rob, what was it like? I know the first one went in from a punch and helped to knock us out of the world cup so excuse me if I'm not all that bothered if he passed away yesterday. Please don't let me catch you claiming someone's taken a dive against us at the Lamex anytime soon.

Fair enough. I was being facetious because I find the cheat narrative very dull and narrow. There was a hell of a lot more to the man. As for diving, the same applies. It will always get singled out and obsessed over but in reality a lot worse goes on in the game on and off the pitch.
