New year: Optimism or Pessimism

By The Professor28/12/2020 09:04Mon Dec 28 09:04:23 2020

So as we approach our final game of the year rock bottom of the league and 5 points from safety, albeit with 2 games in hand.

What is the overall feeling amongst the fans as we go into the new year;

Are you optimistic that the introduction of Wilkins will prove the catalyst to improve results and keep us up ?

Or are you pessimistic that we are doomed to relegation this time around ?

Personally I think Wilkins experience could be just what we need, clearly Revs and Sampson have struggled but with DW’s experience and hopefully contacts to bring in a couple of quality additions in January I think we might just scrape enough points to stay up.

Last season I never really believed that the team had the “minerals” or the quality to keep us up. There weren’t enough players in that team that were truly committed to the football club and evidently showed in our results. This season I feel that it’s different, although there are certain similarities in terms of wins and scoring goals. But the commitment and certain elements are different. To have the 5th best defence in the league shows that the team is capable, just got to put the ball in the back of the net.

Will we stay up? I believe so this season. Don’t get me wrong it’s going to be tough and I believe it’ll go down to the last game of the season, but I think we’ve just got enough. Aitchison and Pett are quality players and will earn us points as we saw on Boxing Day with Aitchison. We HAVE to start winning our home games, build some form at home. If we can be around 20-25 points by our 23rd game, I’ll be happy.

If we do improve results wise it will be all down to Wilkins and what he brings, it's been pretty shit all season with Revs/Sampson and Lennie running things.

To win a game - any game - we are going to have to score more goals than the opposition. There is more likelihood of me discovering gold in my back garden

Yup, listening to Revs again this morning is something I should stop doing as he fills me with zero confidence he knows what he's talking about sadly.

I'll pay to watch tomorrow, home game and my £10 at least goes to the club.

For a start, Wilkins isn't in charge. I'm not sure it would be a good thing if he was, though I would back my dog over the current manager.
What contacts? What quality players do you imagine are itching to join the bottom club in League Two?
With the mixed blessing of Ifollow I have seen more Stevenage games this season than for several years and we are consistently hopeless going forward. We have no width/pace on the flanks and we can't keep the ball.
Generally speaking, the defence is fine, but barring a revolution in the dug out, lack of goals with relegate us.

Contacts, what contacts?

I remember a certain ex England manager who came in with contacts.

He was head of the academy at Palace, not to mention he worked at Brighton, Sheff utd and Southampton, therefore will have contacts there and elsewhere, admittedly it would most likely be loan players but we if we got an inspirational loanee like we did with Chair, it might just be enough to keep us up.

Has he still got his contacts?

Does he have contacts at,, or know our level?

How long since he was active in the game?

What makes you think Leon won't do all the hiring over January?

I'm blindly optimistic we will turn it round. I have nothing whatsoever to back up that belief though.

Wilkins a positive for me but overall I think we are stuffed. Relegation pretty much confirmed UNLESS we sign some established FL Players and get shot of Sampson and Revs.

Not going to happen.

Same old story.
