Match Thread - Newport (a)

By Sev27/2 14:12Sat Feb 27 14:12:15 2021

No Norris in the squad.

Starting line up:

Cumming
Wildin
Vancooten
Cuthbert
Martin
Coker
Lines
Osborne
Pett
List
Newton

Substitutes: Johnson, Vincelot, Hutton, Prosser, Read, Stevens, Aitchison.

Martin probably left mid, although I wouldn't mind trying 3 CBs and two wing backs, with 3 in midfield and 2 up top.

Genuinely forgotten the game already. Other than List's 1 on 1 I can't remember anything that happened. Long 90 mins.

Still, point is a point. Up to 18th

I had never heard the word octogenarian prior to your use of it. I had to look it up. Then tonight I was watching a movie and they used the word. Thought it was a pretty funny coincidence.

Its really incredible how you can be fluent in a language, and still learn new words all the time.

Given our recent return to complete negativity and our primary tactic being not losing, maybe it's time to consider that it wasn't all Sampson's fault after all, despite what the evidence suggested. Seemingly Revs had just as much of a hand in the diabolical football as Sampson.

EDIT: Sounds like Sampson is back on the bench. So let's all get back on it being his fault.

I didnt think about this before, but I wonder why we bothered playing Pett and Lines in the middle when neither are likely to get any opportunity to pass the ball about. I feel like we'd have been better with someone who was more mobile and would cover more ground to pick up the scraps.

Danny Newton is approximately 316% better at winning headers and getting on the end of long, hopeless hoofs than Norris is.

We could have one of the Monstars up front, after stealing Cristiano Ronaldo's skills, and it wouldn't have made a jot of difference.

We went into this to get a 0-0. Had List taken his golden chance, it wouldn't have masked the fact that this has been dreadful.

Surely in the current climate matches could have been played on a local 4g pitch? Although the FA are usually dickheads about such things. Not really a long term solution though either.

Well that was tedious. Pitch no excuse because that doesn't prevent us from getting out of our own half. Newport managing it perfectly well.

Either we are playing to grind out a draw, or they just got the tactics wrong and we can attempt to change it. Hopefully the latter, but given the way we played that half, I'm concerned it's the former and we're in for another dreadful half.

Shit attempt at trolling, but I'd prefer if we actually played long ball instead of hoofing it straight up in the air.

Having 5 at the back isn't helping anything. Completely the wrong formation since there's no way to build from the back out to the wing-backs, who should be our predominant ball carriers. So we are trying to play long ball up to fewer players than we would have playing a 4-4-2.

If we want to match their 3 in the middle, we should have gone 4-3-3.

I don't actually hate the idea of 3 at the back, especially with Coker and Wildin being better at attacking than defending, but I do think that switching to 4-4-2 and just keeping things simple is one of the reasons why we saw a turnaround in form. I don't think we've been playing well enough for long enough to start developing it into anything more complex. I think we just need to carry on with the most simple and straightforward option, and concentrate on getting the basics right on a consistent basis.

I'd honestly rather have seen us go 4-3-3 and just play long ball, if we were insistent on playing 3 in midfield to counter their 3.

I agree. The "what if we lose" attitude is so risk adverse. Negativity has been our downfall for most of the season. Almost every team in this division is as shit as the next, so I dont understand why we go into games acting like we would be lucky to get a point.

Just hope we can see it out and get the draw.

I normally take your views and divide them by 100 to get my view. So I take this game to be a bit of a non event but will be happy if we can get a point.

It was genuinely dreadful, no attacking intent or useful possession from either side.

Yes the pitch was awful but the football was worse.

I'm not exaggerating when I say it was one of the least entertaining games this season. It was utterly dreadful, but was equally shit from both teams. Obviously the pitch played a big part. Obviously a point is a point, I just get frustrated when we don't even attempt to win.

In an ideal world I'd love to go into games like you suggest, and if we were more comfortable in mid table I'd probably also call for that.

But on what was clearly a difficult surface, against a side who are near the top, away from home, I think going to ensure we don't concede and hope we take a chance isnt a terrible plan.

I'd expect us to go for it in our home games and try and get a 0-0 at least away from home.

I appreciate it was dire to watch and that of course is frustrating and in the long run not good for attendances.

I understand the logic of what you're saying, I just don't agree with it. I don't think there is enough of a difference between the teams in League Two to justify going into a game trying to grind out a draw. But that's just me.

Personally, I just have never understood why a team would employ different tactics when playing away than they do at home. I am convinced it's one of those stupid, old-school football mentalities. It has just never made any sense to me. I understand there is psychological research around playing at home vs playing away, but I think that has to be massively influenced by the mentality about playing away from home vs playing at home. People act and play differently because they've been conditioned to think there's some magical difference about playing at home vs playing away.

At the end of the day, football pitches are all the same, give or take a few yards. It's always 11 v 11. So the only real difference is the fans... which is moot at the moment.

I can maybe understand being a little cautious at the start of games, trying to get a solid start under your belt, while you feel out the opposition, but then you need to try and grow into the game. And this mentality is true whether you're home or away.

You could tell by the way we played today that we had zero intention of actually trying to attack with numbers, and instead were going to rely on getting a random chance, like the List one. Had we nicked a 1-0 win, with List taking his chance, I wouldn't have been any more entertained and wouldn't have been any happier with the way we played. A better result, sure, but that would have been it.

There was nothing about Newport to suggest we couldn't have beaten them today. I don't think I've seen a single team this season where I've thought they looked like they were a level above and we should be hanging on for a point. The last team I remember being really impressed by was probably Carlisle, and then before that was Crewe last season. There aren't many good teams that come through League Two, there's no reason to be scared of our opponents.

But anyway, a point is a point. I just hope this mentality isn't a consistent one.

You've hit on a few areas discussing exactly why there is a difference between home and away.

Wider pitches will allow for a wide game, a narrow one hoof and run. If a team has a wide pitch and trains and plays 23 games a year using space on the wings, playing on a longer, thinner pitch will disrupt their normal style of play. Of course, they can adapt, but when one team is playing an extra 22 games a year on that field and trains to match the dimensions of the pitch with the style of play, the home team has a huge advantage.
Then, as Balders mentioned a couple of days back, you have different tricks the home team may employ to disrupt preparations. Watering the pitch, strange smells, lighting, alarms in the hotel, all sorts that can put someone off their preparations.

Finally, you are spot on with the crowds. Not an issue this year, but ordinarily this will be a massive factor. If an away team can grind down the home team and silence the crowd, this can help. If the home team start to get on the back of the home team, this can be even better. Not as much of a problem this year, but even so, a huge factor in normal seasons.

I actually agree with you about the home v away bullshit but that appears to be how it is viewed, and very difficult to change that mentality. The only difference (other than pschological as you say) is the travelling and different preparation.

To be fair, the more disgruntled fans are about 0-0s, the more likely there will be pressure on the manager to change it.

I'm just scared that ever since we have been promised this so called entertaining football, we've been shit and threatened with relegation.

I've always been of the opinion winning is entertaining (and not losing acceptable)and I don't care how it's done.

Youre right, it's the 0-0s that are brutal. I'd rather a 1-0 win against Crawley followed by a 0-1 loss to Bolton. I actually think our hand was forced in the Walsall game because of the early goal, otherwise that would probably have been another 0-0 too.

Grinding out 0-0s is for when you've tried to play a little more expensive and have had no luck doing so. It seems that we started the season with the game plan of grinding it out (with the odd exception), likely because of how shit last season was. But I the management should have done a better job of trying to dispel the bad mentality from last year, especially since the majority of the squad was new. Instead, the Barrow game has set the tone for much of what we have seen this season.

Look, if we finish above the relegation zone, it's an improvement from last year. And as long as we see improvement year over year, it's difficult to complain too much. I just hate settling for mediocrity. We used to be a club that tried to be better than that. Now we are just another Morecambe, Crawley, etc. A team that no-one gives a fuck about, including our own fans half the time.

At least it starts at 7am so I don't have to plan my whole day around it.

So if you're not, I'm not sure why it matters what the running comments about the game are? If you're not watching the game then I'm not sure why you'd need to read all the comments? Usually there are enough conclusive comments at the end to get the general idea of what the game was like.

No one is suggesting we go gung ho. But maybe let's try and get out of our own half on occasion?

Grinding out 0-0 week after week after week isn't good enough. Not just from an entertainment perspective but from the perspective of accumulating points, as was proven last season.

If we can go out and attack Crawley, we can go out and attack Port Vale and Newport. Like I say, no-one is suggesting we go gung ho, we just want to see us actually have a go at winning the game instead of just trying not to lose every fucking week.

And, once again, why no fucking subs? It's just utterly, utterly dreadful.
