If he can grab a goal in the last game of the season, that would give him 8 in 24 since joining us, an average of 1-in-3.

Even if a striker's primary threat isn't goal scoring, I still think they should be chipping in with at least 1-in-3. Anything above 50% obviously ideal, but I don't think you're ever getting that from a player like Norris. 33% is a higher goal return than his career average of 23%, and I think it's a pretty reasonable return for a support striker. If Norris can hit that target in the last game of the season, it would be hard to complain too much. I still don't like him, but I wouldn't be able to knock his contribution, at least.

If he can maintain a 33% average into next season, and List can get above the 50% mark, we'd be laughing.

At least one in three?

How many strikers do you think have had that record for us?

How many strikers have we had that we can consider good? Not many.

For a striker to be considered decent, he should be scoring at least 1 in 3. Just because most of the strikers we have had are shit, doesn't mean we shouldn't be expecting them to not be shit.

1 in 3 isn't an outrageous expectation. Especially not if we want to be challenging for the playoffs or promotion.

Right, but they have 5 players with 5 goals or more (one player with 12 goals, two players with 8, one player with 7 and one player with 5).

We have only 3 (List with 10, Norris with 7, and Newton with 5).

It's fair to say that you don't need a 1/3 striker if the rest of your team chips in with a reasonable number of goals. But ours do not. Of the midfielders who have been regular starters, they have scored a combined 10 goals (Carter 4, Osborne 2, Pett 2, Read 2). Wildin and Cuthber have also chipped in with 2 each.

So, either we need more goals from the midfield, or we need strikers who can score more frequently. Like I said, if Norris can notch 1-in-3 next season, and List can push up around 1-in-2, it won't matter as much how many goals the rest of the team chips in with. My point is that Norris has proved this season (albeit over a half-season) that he is capable of 1-in-3, or close enough. I also believe List has the potential, but we haven't seen it yet.

What's more - between Norris and List, we have two players who are different enough that it won't be easy to shut our game down.

If you are a striker and you're not scoring at least 1-in-3, the best you can be described as is average (unless you're getting 10+ assists a season). Is average enough? Depends on the rest of the team.

I'm not really sure what your issue is with what I'm saying? Norris' goal return with us has exceeded his career average, and I'm saying that's great. I'm also saying that if he can carry it on into next season, and List can also improve his goal scoring, which will be helped by consistently playing up front, then we will be laughing. I'm not saying both players are shit if they don't hit those goals, I'm just saying that we would be in a really great spot if they did. Like I say, scoring 1-in-3 takes you out of the 'average League Two striker' category and into the 'decent League Two striker' category. Norris is very close to accomplishing that, which is far more than I expected him to.

Have we also factored in how many goals we score. I think he has scored 1 in 4 of our total goals since he arrived, is that good?

Seems a decent return for a supporting striker role at Stevenage.

10 in 45.

Which is obviously shit. But he also probably played 30 of those games on the wing. I'd be interested to see his return if he played a full season up front. I suspect he could hit 20 in 45. Not quite 1 in 2, but still a decent return.

He isn't a goal scorer either, though? He's a pressing forward. I have never suggested that Newton was the answer. For a time, I thought he was a better option than Norris (back when Norris wasn't scoring either). But given Norris' recent form, and his goal return over the half-season he has been with us, I think it's pretty clear that Norris is the better option. Especially when you consider Newton's injury issues.

Do I prefer Norris over Newton as a player? No. I prefer Newton's style, and he's the sort of player who causes problems through sheer hard work, which I appreciate. But the stats don't lie. As a pressing forward/support striker, he has scored fewer goals than Norris and got fewer assists. So it doesn't really matter which 'style' I prefer anymore, because one is clearly more effective than the other.

I don't really understand what point you're trying to make here? I'm admitting that Norris is a better option than Newton, and that Norris and List has the potential to be a great partnership. Is that incorrect?

Byron Harrison, 3 in 6 starts.

2015/16 season.

Prolific.

Oh, and me. 1 in 1.

Played one 10 minute 5 a side game at Boro, and scored in a 4-1 defeat.

Against proper footballers including Bossie, Laird & Henry.

But I don't like to mention it too often.
