If I was on the downward end of a career that had a limited lifespan and I was offered a pay rise at another company, I'd take it.

Loyalty works both ways and it's not like we signed him for 5 years when he came in.

Jokes aside, can really we not stump up the wages Port Vale can?

Probably not. I believe they spend decent money. And as Sev says below, if we have a wage structure we shouldn't be going beyond that on players.

And they were already one of my darkhorse picks for promotion before this signing. After Clarke came in during last season they finished in good form and have made some good signings.

One of Clarke's matchday preparation sessions is part of the library on The Coaches Voice (coaching website). He comes across as a very good coach. Appeared very thorough and seemingly had researched his opposition (Crawley) well.

I am bias on him because of his time at THE GAS, where he led them to double promotion and a solid finish in L1, but I do rate him as a decent manager and he has done well in all four roles. And looking at the season just gone alone, when he left Walsall for Vale it led to Vale going on a great run of form (after a slow first handful of games) and Walsall falling off a cliff.

Very interested to see whether Vale live up to my expectations of them this season. And I don't dislike them anymore either, unlike when we first encountered them in those FA Cup games. Their new owner seems really good and her comments when they missed out because of the 19/20 season being cut short were very impressive and understanding. Same as Accrington actually, used to absolutely detest everything about them but their new owner is a breath of fresh air and has worked wonders for everything about that club. And I have a grudging respect for Coleman too, he really does a great job there.

We probably could but I don't think we should if it's well outside our normal wage structure or comfort zone.

It's a risk to break the bank for one player and sets a precedent for other players (assuming they'd sort of know he was highest paid etc)

This is it. He's definitely better, but not significantly so. I think Pett always thought he was significantly better, though. Both this time and last.

Confidence is a key attribute in competitive sport.

Arrogance may not endear you to the team unless you can back it up.

I don't know Pett so no idea which category he fits into. But he's a decent player who did well for us this time round.

I did indeed. I searched it and it seems to be some reality TV thing with someone called Jane. Still none-the-wiser (or interested) as to who Jane is or why this happened.

Good luck to him. With Johnson, Conlon and Pett there's a strong ex-boro contingent there now.

He can flat share with Tom Conlon now. The two Toms. Just think of the fun they can have together preparing the breakfast, just like the Two Ronnies.

I’m not sure Pett’s move was anything to do with money. Didn’t the club say recently that he told them it was nothing to do with money (we ‘couldn’t offer any amount to keep him’) because he needed a move north for personal reasons?
