Saturday 3pm blackout

By Owen B14/9 10:08Tue Sep 14 10:08:44 2021

What are people's opinions on the recent Saturday 3pm blackout debate?

My view is that the blackout should stay. It is too simplistic to say "everyone knows how/where to stream Premier League matches" - this is probably mostly true. I don't think clubs like ours are competing with nerds who watch streams, they would not be coming to lower league/non-league matches anyway. My view is that it would put matches involving clubs like ours into direct competition with going to the pub to watch a Saturday 3pm on Sky, which is objectively more of a tempting choice than an illegal stream. It could potentially wipe out walk ups.

I think the blackout should stay too. There is so much football on TV now, you could argue too much.

There are a number of people who will pay £20 to go to a lower league game on a Saturday and have a few pints, however if they can save £20, watch a Prem game in the pub at 3pm on a Saturday, they probably would.

I am biased in that I don't watch much football on TV, don't have Sky or BT (I'm 31 not 71 by the way) but most of my mates have zero interest in anything but the Prem and although some attend games, the vast majority are TV watchers.

Assume no streaming allowed then now.
One good thing clubs like us maybe missing out is re away fans. If only home club could stream game and kept all money we may make more from away fans eg Barrow brought approx. 200 we might have been able to add a fair few to this as such a long journey.

The problem with allowing streaming seems to be making the sums add up. For example, four people going to a game = 4x £20(ish) = £80 + food/drink, if they were to buy one stream and have a get together, the spend is a tenner.

Streaming is the future, for sure. But I don't know the solution to the revenue, especially in the winter months when fans would be less inclined to go to matches.

Yes. Play 5 games on a Sunday starting at midday. Super Super Sunday with Barry Neville.

Move all Premier League clubs from 20 mins down the track too.

EDIT: Arsenal can go back to Woolwich.

In fairness, Thameslink are doing all they can to obliterate their weekend service, so they're doing their bit.

They buggered me up right and proper last Saturday, everything cancelled because of a fatality at Croydon.

I'd be inclined to give them a free pass on that occasion. I was more referring to their lack of availabile drivers and subsequent cancellations most weekends.

That would an interesting compromise - so Premier League have nothing, for example, between 2.30pm-5.30pm and play the vast majority of Championship, L1, L2 and non-league Saturdays 3pm?

Yup. Maybe a Saturday midday and 8pm premier league game to cover euro games.

Yep, would be my solution too. The 5 games or so that are not picked for national tv coverage can be shown by the clubs for £15 a go or something.

Am surprised we don't try having home games on Friday nights more often, especially against other teams in the SE where their fans can still get home by train. Am sure we'd get bigger attendances, people have too much else to do on Saturdays

Not a bad shout. Do 7pm kickoff and people can still go out afterwards.

At 9pm?

By 9:15pm if they don't let you in in slippers, serve chocolate digestives and tea in my favourite mug frankly I'm not interested.

The only downside I can see is for Premier League fans who actually go to matches (can you imagine such a thing?!), but they're probably used to not playing Saturdays at 3pm, as I'd imagine less than 50% of matches kick off then now.

Think thats what the PL have accomplished over the years, moved more and more away from the Sat 3pm kick off. Makes this an easier argument for them to get the black out abolished, games at around 12, 3pm, 5pm, repeat on a Sunday.

Not sure theres much League clubs can do if it is.
