The players have given up on the manager, haven’t they?

That was my thought watching it too. Barely any of them committed to a tackle the entire game and didn't seem up for it all. Combine that with the tactical disaster with 3 at the back, Coker and Daly out of position etc and I'm surprised it was only 4

He’s had plenty of time, he has to go now whilst there’s still time to fix this mess.

I’d stick with Revs for the time being. We started last season poorly and turned it around so he has some credit for that. You’d have to be a fool to not see that things aren’t working, but I think some of the early season performances were decent and showed promise but we seem to have lost our way and with it our confidence. Today was really bad, but I would like to see how react over the coming games.
If there was to be a change in the management team, who would you like to see come in ( assuming that Wilkins would not want to take on the role)?

"We started last season poorly and turned it around so he has some credit for that."

Wilkins coming in and things completely transforming was prob just a coincidence.

"You’d have to be a fool to not see that things aren’t working"

Yep. And yet Revs is just banging the same drum over, and over, and over, expecting different results.

"I think some of the early season performances were decent and showed promise"

We scraped past Barrow who are 15th and beat Bristol Rovers who are 3rd bottom. I'd also argue that the warning signs that we would be very vulnerable down the wings were there even after the Barrow game.

"Today was really bad, but I would like to see how react over the coming games."

Why do you think it will be any different to our reaction in the games after getting bummed by Bradford?

"If there was to be a change in the management team, who would you like to see come in ( assuming that Wilkins would not want to take on the role)?"

Off the top of my head, I don't know. I think someone who's overachieving with a Conference team (maybe someone who has taken their team as far as they can go) or maybe we should look abroad and see what's going on there. MK Dons just hired an English guy from some team in Belgium. And Notts County hired Ian Burchnall from some team in Norway. It isn't really my job to find a replacement, and just because you, me, or anyone else on Borochat doesn't know a manager off the top of their head doesn't mean we should continue to flog a dead horse. I'm gonna do some research though, cos I'm sure there's plenty of options about.

I'm sorry to pick apart your post, but I just think the blind persistence with Revs is infuriating. There is nothing to suggest he can turn it around, and he basically admitted today that he has no idea how to change things. I just dont see why we should continue with it when it's clearly not working, and arguably never has worked.

No problem with you picking apart my post.

I’d argue we should have beaten Port Vale and Swindon.

I also disagree that there’s no evidence to show he can turn it around - he did so last season. No question Wilkins had a huge impact, and with the two together I’d give them the opportunity again.

It’s not your job to find a replacement but when you advocate so strongly that a change should take place, I think you should be able to back it up with an alternative. That said, I agree with your comments in the approach we should take should we make a change. Unfortunately, I have zero confidence in Wallace’s ability to select the right candidate. His track record scares me.

"I also disagree that there’s no evidence to show he can turn it around - he did so last season."

This is valid. I meant this season there has been no adjustments or changes. I'd like a manager who can make changes during the game to try and affect the outcome, let alone someone who changes things from week to week.

But you're right, there was a definite turn-around last season. Realistically we will never know who was truly behind it. It's all conjecture.

"Unfortunately, I have zero confidence in Wallace’s ability to select the right candidate. His track record scares me."

Yeah, it's such a shame. So much of what he brings as a chairman is exceptional, but this aspect really let's him down.

He has changed things around this season.

Yesterday was a completely different formation.

He played players in alien positions like Wezza used to especially when it was going Pete Tong.

As I said elsewhere, the only positives are that he's realised that 4222 isn't working and by starting Marshall over Prosser, he's accepted Prosser is our worst CB, (albeit Marshall was also poor yesterday by all accounts).

Maybe 44 fucking 2 next game?

No he hasn't. He changed the formation for one game. I'm also 99% sure that the only reason we changed to a back 3 is because they played with a back 3. We did it every time we played a team who played 3 at the back last season. A back 3 with the players we had (baring in mind there was no TVC) was a fucking circus, with Revs as the clown.

I dont think his playing career has anything to do with him being a manager. Similarly my opinion that Roberts would be good has nothing to do with his ability as a player.

You can tell by the way that roberts conducts himself exactly how he'd approach things. He talks a lot of sense, he's an intelligent guy, and I think he's the sort of person who will always push to improve. I think he would bring back the high bar that Westley always set and I think he would, if nothing else, change the culture of the team.

I just put the game on for the last 5 mins of the first half... it looks like we are playing 5-2-3, with Coker left-sided centre back and Daly & Wildin wing backs?

If it's not that, then I have no idea what position Andrade and List are supposed to be playing. List definitely isn't playing right midfield. He could be playing at the right side #10, with Andrade the left side #10, but then Daly is playing left midfield in some weird lop-sided midfield 3?

Long story short... the shape is a shambles.

At least in the 4-2-2-2 shambles the players looked like they knew where they were supposed to be.

And Coker left-sided centre back doesn't make much sense to me. His best attributes are going forward, and his weakest attribute is his defending. Playing him LCB is highlighting his worst attribute while limiting his ability to get forward.

I need a bit more time to assess the formation, but initial signs aren't great.

Sorry, why shouldn't we expect to beat teams like FGR?!

Steve just made a comment about how we have to be realistic that this is a good FGR side, which is fair enough, but we really need to be asking the question why FGR have progressed to become a team we shouldn't expect to get a result against, meanwhile we continue to languish in the same position season after season.

I'm not shipping Westley, but the last time we looked like we were going anywhere was the season he got us into the playoffs, and we sacked him. That was 2015. Other than minor blips (both positive and negative) it has been largely the same for the 6 years since.

Can anyone say that they think the performances and trajectory of this club is any different now than it was when we had Sheringham as manager? Or Sarll? Or Dino? Or Sampson? Every single appointment since we sacked Westley has been fucking terrible.

The only one that had any potential was re-appointing Westley, but even that was shit, and we didn't give him a chance to do what he does anyway, so it was an utterly pointless endeavor.

Spot on. Expectations are so, so low at this club now because of everything that's happened after we lost at Southend. Even creating a few chances is seen as a big plus because of the rubbish we've watched for the last few years. We got a lot better in the second half of last season but we are getting worse at the moment and I really don't have much faith in Revell to sort things out. Or for Wallace to appoint someone decent but that's a separate matter

I think Wallace needs to recognize he can't pick a manager and appoint someone who can. A Director of Football. He has to accept his role in the club not moving forward. He does so many good things for the club, but his inability to hire managers is always going to render everything else pointless.

Really, I thought from the Chairman notes today, hand picked players by the manager and a very good squad has been put together.

After the first 2 games people were saying we were building something special.

8 without a win would suggest that building is on the verge of collapse.

From watching the players, I think they're decent. I am 100% confident that if we switched the system, we'd see different results.

And 3-4-3 isn't the change we needed.

I don't know whether to praise Revs for actually changing it, or whether to be bemused that he somehow managed to pick something worse that doesn't actually address the issues of the 4-2-2-2.

I agree. We have League Two defenders. They can't defend 2v1 on their own. I'd argue no defenders can, even elite level. We need to offer them some sort of potential.

I thought Daly had a good game today, and was one of the few who put in a shift, but a left wing back he isn't.

We are constantly undone behind our full backs , once you have watched ya twice you know it and therefore so do the other clubs . Our defensive organisation is woeful and absolutely no sign of it being fixed . It isn’t working , it’s broken and it needs fixing. Revs is not the answer to the questions that are being asked . By my reckoning we have now been ^fixing it and Working hard m^ for over 2 seasons of post match interviews , it means absolutely nothing.

We are losing sight of the fact that FGR are one of the best sides in league 2, we are one of the weakest. Against Swindon the lads gave it some welly and deserved to win, today we capitulated. There is NOTHING Revs or any manager can do about that, you can only try harder next time.
With more confidence Stevenage can beat four or five of the teams in this league and we will survive. This month will continue to be difficult.

You are right they were a very good side, but the performance was pathetic. The only optimism is we wont play many teams that good and we may be better if we have TVC back and Cuthbert for the whole game (although we could have been 3 or 4 nil down whilst he was playing) and Lines for example.

Need a few more games to see where exactly we are. Tough away game then a couple of home games youd like to think we can get some points in those.

Otherwise it'll be a bottom of the table clash at Oldham with potentially a new manager or a demoralised team.

Need to have belief and support so we dont end up in a downward spiral like the last time.

Interesting that FGR included two players who achieved little for us last season, which suggests our management were unable to get anything like the best out of them. Today was a seven goal retreat from our result against them last year, and yet we are supposed to be better.

Jack was unlucky with injuries and didn't offer much here last season, altho'hotel living during lockdown, away from his family wouldn't have helped.

Stevens was industrious but equally never shone.

If we'd have kept either people would've been surprised.

Some players just don't click at some clubs. Look at Mark Hughes, shit here, brilliant at Accrington before and after.

Oh I agree today we were terrible. Could've lost by far more.

We are clearly in a slump and playing one of the better sides wont be the time we turn it around. Its teams like Walsall and Sutton who clearly weren't very good that we needed to beat but still came up short. That's more worrying to me than today's embarrassment.

I think the players we have are good, certainly an 11, maybe the squad depth is a little light.

Trouble today I saw no team. Just a bunch of individuals. No real leadership, no passion, no cohesion and little idea of what they were doing.

For me Daly has the best attitude. Seems to believe in himself, looks for the ball, not scared of trying things.

Others go absent or missing when things get tough.

The first couple of games we had a plan, it was well drilled and it worked. But then team scouted us and saw how to counteract it and beat us. Now we have no plan B or we are trying to find one.

We didn't have wingers last season either, and it wasn't an issue.

Ozzie is a perfectly adequate winger. So is Read. So is Andrade. So is Daly. I'd even argue Reeves could do a job there, if we want Lines and Taylor in the middle. We could play Coker and Wildin on the wings if we wanted out and out wingers, with Barry and Melbourne playing full back.

We have plenty of options to play a different formation, Revs just doesn't want to.

I'd argue a more urgent need than wingers is a centre back. Cuthbert is clearly not fit, and we are forcing him to play cos Prosser is fucking awful.

Agree with most of that AE
But Not having Picking Prosser out as the scape goat though
I have bias re Pross on playing left side. Better balance imo
Cuthbert was clearly struggling with their forward line and we should have been 3 down whilst Scotty was on the pitch.
Then went off with a hurt arm lol
He didn't fancy it.
Unfortunately Marshall went on to have his worse game of the season
And Pross gets the blame. Do me a favour.
We should have started with a Back 4 Pross and Scotty starting but WILKINS wanted Marshall
Let's be clear here WILKINS picks this team

Totally understand where your coming from.
But i think Pross is a better player than you think.
Playing behind that midfield John Terry would struggle.
For me Wilkins got it totally wrong
Like I said earlier, we should have started with Scooty and Pross in a back 4..
The same back 4 that conceded very few last year.
Something is glaringly wrong with the tactics being insisted on.
Tactics that will see a long season of struggle if not changed. imo.

I've just watched the extended lowlights. One goal looked a mile offside, the other three were down to dreadful defending. Marshall's lack of awareness, pace and, dare I say it, remorse for the 4th goal, summed it up.
Our success in the second half of last season was built on clean sheets. With mostly the same personnel we suddenly can't defend. Why?
Revs, who looked genuinely shell-shocked in his post match interview, says he can't put his finger on what's gone wrong. I suggest that's where he starts sticking his finger.

Aye, something we all highlighted pre season and even last season. We have recruited to fit a certain system but not consider what if that doesn't work.

Having said that we could easily play Bruno and Daly as wide players and Daly has demonstrated he is more than capable playing out wide, and providing defensive support for the full back. Reeves also seems wasted in a defensive midfield role and today him and Taylor didn't get into the game at all. He (Reeves) could play out wide.

Anang
Wildin TVC Cuthbert Coker
Bruno Lines Taylor* Daly
List Norris

*or Reeves depending how defensive we want to go.

Or like last season you play Osbourne/Carter out wide albeit not their natural positions.

We're aiming for survival now? It was promotion in pre-season.

Every single part of that post is garbage.

FGR should not be a bigger/better club than us. That's not arrogance; they are a very similar sized club and there's no reason why they should have assembled a team that's top of the league while we continue to tread water.

FGR have been pushing for promotion for a few years now and that alone attracts good players. I do admire how they have done this on such a small fan base, smaller even than ours. Stevenage are perennial strugglers, we can’t attract above average players, please be realistic. This will take several years to turn around.

We were a L1 club. Then got in the playoffs immediately after getting relegated.

Then flushed the entire lot down the toilet.

I think your post highlights why we should be in that position.
