Harrogate prediction

By Bragbury10625/9 08:14Sat Sep 25 08:14:02 2021

any point today would do,but would like the team who plays to-day to want to play for Stevenage F.C
not just going through the motions as if its only another league game .
good luck to the supporters who are going and a save journey, not their today going to newmarket,
( to try and earn a few quid ).

1-1 list

I think a draw is the best we can hope for realistically.

I think we'll lose, but only by one goal.

A laboured 2-0 home win.

Me to be back in the pub after 25 minutes.

Not familiar with the pubs in Harrogate, but I once went to the pump room museum. Because I'm rock and roll...

We'll play much better and concede a 95th minute pen via a needless hack.

I've built up a machine learning model which is designed to attempt football match predictions (shameless plug: @efl_predictions on Twitter), and it's saying that the most likely result for us today is 3-0 to Harrogate. It's giving us a 32% chance of winning though so it may not be as foregone a conclusion as it seems!

Sounds like a fun thing. How many matches/seasons data did you pre-load it with?

It's been trained on every game from the last 6 seasons, split by league because my assumption was that games across leagues aren't comparable (I find that the Championship is far more "stable" than League Two for example).

It takes things like goals/shots/points per game, form, and relative team strength into account. Obviously it doesn't get it right every time, but I'm approaching similar accuracy levels to the bookies which is a decent start seeing as I only started at the tail end of last season.

Cool, that's a fair amount of data. I presume it's recency weighted, i.e. a match 6 seasons ago is probably not that relevant as compared to a match played earlier that season.

Yes that's correct! I

t progressively increases the weight each match for a specific team has as time goes on. The weights for the last 6 games (I chose 6 pretty arbitrarily to be honest) are given the same (maximum) weight, to account for form trends.

I held off doing any predictions until 6-7 games had been played this season as I didn't want to base it off last season's data (new players, managers, styles, etc.). This was definitely the right thing to do judging by our change in form pre and post the off-season!
