Revs is now strong favourite - 1/2
Ainsworth and Garrard - both 4/1

Everyone else is at least 10/1.

Duff is my want.

I love Revs to bits and hope he stays, but don't think it is right for him to manage us again yet.

I am coming around to Ainsworth.

Garrard would leave me very underwhelmed and concerned.

Flynn would also leave me very underwhelmed.

I would prefer us to tap up Darrell Clarke and get him than most of those on most of the lists.

What am I missing about Ainsworth. To me, it seems like he'd be a decent shout. He has promotions on his resume, which is more than most can say. He also did it when working with a small budget. He's been around long enough that you'd think he'd have decent connections within the game, too. I'm not really sure what there is to complain about. I've also read his tactics described as "up and at 'em" and a high pressing, attacking style. Again... not sure what the issue is.

Can only speak for myself, and will add that I said I am coming round to him in the post you replied to, but I think a lot of my issue is/was the club he managed than him himself entirely. Wycombe have always been utter dickheads.

But there are a lot of similarities with the two clubs, especially during the spells that our fans loved (GW and Evans). The football Wycombe played under him was horrible to watch, definitely far more direct and worse than us under GW and Evans, but it worked. And ultimately we are never going to succeed at this level playing good football as we cannot afford the players to do so, so any attempts to play that style will result in our results not being as good. And ultimately fans are more interested in results than football - just look at the past couple of seasons for proof.

The other thing was they were the absolute masters of dark arts under him, again far worse than we were under GW at our worst. That annoyed me when we did it, and annoys me when others do it, as I believe it is cheating the fans out of action they have paid for. But again, if we are doing so whilst winning then our fans will go along with it.

What he does have massively in his favour is a history of overachieving with them. Not only did he have them fighting at the top end of L1 for a long time, but he got them promoted into the Championship against all the odds, nearly kept them up in the Championship (went down just one point behind Derby for safety), and nearly got them straight back up (losing the playoff final to Sunderland). And has a lot of contacts, which led to Wycombe always getting in some impressive loans.

If we want somebody with experience, contacts, who unites the team together, has a history of overachieving in L1 with a small club and can get them into the Championship, and has shown good loyalty, then he seems to fit the bill. Whether he can replicate that with us is the main question.

Couldn't agree more. There's, obviously, no certainty of success, but he has a fantastic CV at a similar sized club. One aberration at QPR, but it could be he's much more suited at a smaller club.

My thinking was they may wait until the season is over because there could be some managers leaving other clubs once the playoffs are done etc and may not want to appoint from what's available now if someone more suitable could be available later.

Yeah. Did very well (albeit at a very low level) immediately before Sutton, and has done wonderfully there. And knows our club (although I daresay very little nowdays is how it was when he played for us).

The main concern being his lack of experience in management.

I am aware, but even with that it is only about two seasons in proper management.

I don't want a journeyman manager by any means, but only two years is very inexperienced for what will be a tough job. Not against him though, as said above, looking like he could have a good career ahead.

Point taken, but Mous and Schuey are good examples of ability overcoming lack of experience.
Also, time actually doing the job is far more valuable than significantly longer spent as an assistant or coach.
Of the realistic names mentioned, I would take Moro (or Ainsworth, if he can explain the QPR nightmare) over most.

Listening to Les Ferdinand and reading not too far between the lines, it sounds like QPR is an absolute shit show. He cited a toxic environment as his reason for eventually leaving. Sounds like a nightmare.

Not trying to make excuses for Ainsworth, but it's worth considering that a bad managerial stint isn't always down to the manager's ability.

Those asking for an experienced safe pair of hands might try explaining what that looks like.
A Steve Evans clone maybe? Every managerial appointment is a gamble. It is worth remembering that SE was sacked by Gillingham and Peterborough.

He was on the Stick to Football podcast (with Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Jill Scott, Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane). It was actually a really decent listen and I think Ferdinand comes across incredibly well whenever I've heard him on podcasts (he also did an interview with Quickly Kevin, but it was more focused on the 90s, for obvious reasons, whereas the interview on Stick to Football was more recent stories).

I don?t think we?re in a position where we can take a ?gamble.? Pompey and Plymouth arguably have been, in the case of Portsmouth they were slinging a lot of shit at the wall trying to get back to the Championship and it?s finally stuck with Mous.

This appointment is important for us. It needs to be someone who can have us punching above our weight. It might not sound ambitious but a steady hand who can consolidate in League One and possibly have a flirt with the play offs will do me just fine.

He's not that inspiring but if we are looking to consolidate after Evans nicks our best players, we could do a lot worse. He's experienced at the level, well connected, good with the media and a 'nice bloke'

And he has lovely hair and some nice suede ankle boots with Cuban heels,.so Chuds should be happy enough.

Serious question... What are the major objections to Ainsworth? I've heard lots about "He plays horrible football" etc but Westly and Evans are two of our best ever managers and their football isn't exactly easy on the eye all the time.

For me weighing up the positives and negatives, I see...

Positives:

*I believe he's fairly local - IE not up North.
*He knows league 1 very well.
*He arguably overachieved with Wycombe for years inc getting to Championship.
*He was VERY loyal to Wycombe and would have likely stayed with QPR for years if not sacked.
*Seems well connected and has a knack for finding players who will run through walls for him.
*He's passionate and a bit of a character.
*I'm certain he'd come and clap the East after every game!!!! (Being a bit ironic here.)

Not really sure on the negatives other than his failure at QPR and that he can be a bit odd. Mind you, is getting guys in to teach the Haka any weirder than GW smashing up toy trucks etc?

Feel free to shower me in the negatives.
