Dan Butler

I was hearing a lot of criticism directed at him first half at Carlisle.

But I want to put forward an alternative take.

Now, in a half where we were absolutely shite, Butler probably had the most involvement/influence of any Boro player. Yes some passes went astray and most corners failed to beat the first man, but at least he wasn't hiding.

To me the problem wasn't Butler, the problem was the players you didn't notice.

The players that don't want the ball, the ones who go missing when things aren't going well. They escape criticism because they've been hiding from the ball. We had too many of those first half but none will be singled out as much because they didn't make any errors as such (because they hardly got near the ball).

Yet the one who gets involved, tries his best to do something and doesn't shy away from the ball is the one who gets all the abuse.

This for me creates a mindset problem, because it will just lead to more players not wanting the ball and wanting to go unnoticed as they're scared of doing stuff wrong.

I'd rather have an environment where players are not scared of making mistakes/errors, so that half the team don't go missing.

Absolutely.
He is normally trying to do two jobs as he rarely has any cover in front of him.
Criticising DB is looking at symptoms rather than sorting out the root cause IMO

Some people spent several seasons slating Luther because he was "normally trying to do two jobs as he rarely has any cover in front of him"

No surprise people are doing it to Butler now.

All our new fans are Gen Z types that can't accept defeat, especially when we haven't lost many over the past two seasons.

Dan Butler feels the brunt of the anger as he's always closest to the East Terrace.

most people are not always slating Butler, but like me believes he could do with a rest and give Guinness-Walker a game or two. He has shown he has the skills and ability to take people on and get to the by line, so why not give him a shot

Butler will be better fitness wise if he has had a rest

Luther didn't used to offer what Butler does going forward, after coming to us as a flying full back he seemed to have that beaten out of him and became a full back who could neither defend nor attack. He's now good going forward and I would say better at defending then Butler.

How many goals have we scored this season where it?s been Butler?s ball into the box that has led to us scoring? I?d say a good fair few. He?d be one of the first names on the team sheet for me

Butler has been a great signing, he defends so well considering he's always exposed down the left, with no midfield player drifting wide enough to assist him

Glad to hear he's rated by people as I too think he's been a good signing. I'd like to see more of him and Guinness-Walker play together, but may be a bit late on the season to form an understanding etc.

G-W is one of the few players we have who is happy to run with the ball and looks lively, others just look to pass and move/hoof and not take players on or push forward with the ball.

Butler has been one of our outstanding players along with Freeman and G-W (from what I've seen of him). Last line of defence on the left, rarely putting a foot wrong when under pressure. Some amazing, inch perfect, full pitch width passes. Brilliant signing.

I wouldn't go that far, but he's a very dependable left back at this level. I'd take him off set pieces though!

I've not studied this, but my impression is that DB has only been on attacking set pieces when other preferred options (JFC, Harvey White etc) were not on the pitch. I think that's about the level of it... but I could be wrong. I definitely agree that corners are not his forte!*. Given our strength in the air, poor set piece delivery has been a real problem in recent games.

Now I think of it, an immediate ban on DB taking corners from LHS is called for!!!

(*It is *much* harder to strike an effective corner than a lot of fans imagine!)

Agree with others that DB has been an absolutely fantastic signing.

I think he works so hard and should always play , although I do think him
and NGW playing together will cause a lot of chances on the left and the amount of time the ball was on the left in the first half against Carlisle , I feel we would have won if we would have started like that . Saying that though, I?m confident Steve knows a lot more than me.
