It was a bloody ridiculous challenge, and certainly dangerous. He completely poleaxed Clunis, who was almost stationary right by the touchline after attempting to retrieve a wayward pass. There was no need for it whatsoever. Merstham seemed to be systematically targeting Clunis all evening, with different players taking turns to assault him in similar areas of the pitch on the left flank. Michael Abnett was booked early for upending him on the halfway line, the no.6 escaped with just a talking to for a crude body check that prevented a clear run down the wing, then there was the red card incident.

I think it was no.6 who brought down Willock for what should have been a penalty + red card on our first goal, if our man hadn't managed to divert the ball into the net from a prone position. And if Merstham want to see what cheating looks like I suggest they consider no.6 getting Drage booked by theatrically going down holding his head after an aerial challenge, then miraculously recovering after he realised the ref was going to summon the physio and he'd have to go off.

Merstham certainly gave us a tougher 90 minutes than Canvey did on the night, but you'd expect that in their first home game in a higher division and with so many of our ex-players involved. I'm not so sure they will steer clear of relegation; Peacehaven and Witham each gave us two competitive games last season and still went straight back down again. I thought they were short of attacking flair and guile and not especially solid at the back, although their defence was generally well protected by the midfield for long spells on Tuesday. I doubt they'll play with quite the same intensity on a regular basis.
