Whitehawk are the strongest side I've seen us play in a league or cup match for several years. They had a bit too much individual quality and would probably have found a way to beat us without a sequnce of appalling decisions by the refreree, mostly in the early part of the game. We should have had a penalty inisde five minutes when Scannell was pulled back by the arm as he ran the ball into the box. They got a dubious looking one after ten minutes when Wilson came off his line to stop Mills, but there was a clear handling offence in the build up so we should have had a free kick. (If Wilson had committed a foul in that situation he should have been sent off, so the fact the ref only booked shim suggested he wasn't absolutely certain it was a foul in the first place. Then as mentioned we should have had a free kick instead of them being awarded the corner from which they go their second. Scannell was clearly pulling vigorously on his marker's shirt before peeling off and being brought down for our penalty. The linesman appearede to see that and the referee consulted him after complaints from the home players, then decided to stick by his initial decision! Their cheating runt of a number 7 should have had a second yellow card for a shameful piece of simulation, throwing himself dramatically to the floor after being outmuscled by Scannell, then near the end he went down as it he'd been blasted in the legs with a shotgun after an innocous challenge by lightweight youth teamer Jayesimi, before quickly recovering when he realised the ref wasn't going to book our man. The keeper's timewasting was ridiculous. He didn't really need to do it,. it just seemed to be almost something he felt he should to out of habit - a default reaction to being ahead.

I wouldn't mind watching Whitehawk regularly, because they are an excellent team, but their wage bill must be astronomical, and how on earth do you justify operating a full time professional squad on their crowds? They were only one match away from promotion to Conference National last season, yet their last home league attendance (agaisnt Chelmsford) was just 238. Clubs like this epitomiose everything that's wrong with non-league football for me. Power mad millionaire(s) splurging ridiculous amounts of money on players without improving the ground sufficiently (the two glorified second hand Meccano stands behind the goal hardly count) or pulling the crowds to sustain it in the long term. We've seen it all beofre. In a few years time they'll either go bust of go plummetting back down the divisions: Hornchurch, Fisher Athletic, Grays Athletic, Canvey Island, Farnborough (twice), St Leonards, Colne Dynamoes, Sittingbourne etc.
