How to write an Essay?

Writing is not only a creative art, but also a profession that requires precise structural rules and guidelines. Each of us, sooner or later, has had to deal with a type of non-creative writing, an agglomeration of technique, precision and research, often necessary for work and professional assignments.

This is why I have decided to inaugurate a new category, that of Writing for a living, in which I will focus on the most popular types of texts in the workplace, which you can find on my Editing site HERE in the section dedicated to GhostWriting.

First of all, it is good to know what an essay is, that is, what type of text you must have in mind when preparing to write an essay.

The essay is an argumentative text, that is a text that argues, in fact, its own thesis, a problem or a specific theme. The thesis can be explained and defended or explained and accused: the purpose of an argumentative text is to persuade the reader of the validity of what is said or, in this case, written.

The essays can be compared to political speeches, to the speeches of lawyers or to the sermons of priests: they deal with social, philosophical, environmental problems and so on.

Each essay may have a different theme, but they all have the same purpose - to convince the recipients - and the same way in which one tries to achieve the aforementioned purpose, which consists in demonstrating and explaining one's argument and opinion, obviously with variants of style and attitudes of the writer himself.

Before diving into writing an essay, it is imperative to seek information and read up on the topic we want to deal with. We cannot expect to write an astrophysics essay if we do not even know the composition of the universe. To write this type of text we need to know in depth the theme it deals with and, later, inform ourselves to retrieve examples and opinions necessary to prove our own and refute other conflicting opinions.

The best documentation is that in the field: knowing what we are talking about means, very often, having lived or experienced it. In addition to this, it is necessary to inform yourself through official documents, statistics, public information and lesser known ones.

Paying attention to the truthfulness of the sources is essential to add credibility to your opinions: evaluating, explaining and persuading the reader is of fundamental importance for the success of the essay.

To give some examples: Georges Bataille's Literature and Evil, in which the author beautifully argues the indissoluble link between writing literature and evil seen as a sense of guilt through the analysis of authors such as Kafka, Proust, Emily Brontë and Baudelaire (of which you can find my previous article here: Baudelaire - Advice to young writers). Or, Life is a War Repeated Every Day by Oriana Fallaci, in which the ruthless and wonderfully crude journalist explains why she hates war, where this hatred comes from and why war is always lurking even in apparent times of peace. How can I not talk about Virginia Woolf and her A room of one's own, about which I wrote an article a short time ago What do women need to write a novel?

To argue an opinion it is good to know which recipients the text is addressed to. In addition to the recipient, the destination of the essay itself must also be clear: scientific or literary publication, popularization, specialist magazine and so on.

Then a thesis must be developed, the most important part of the essay. The thesis must be original, persuade the reader and demonstrate their arguments through winning examples and truthful and valid documentation.

Here is a list of the minimum and essential steps that can form the essay:

Examine the topic that must be addressed by recalling memories and facts that refer to it.
Reconstruct and learn about the most widespread opinions on the subject, explain and confirm or refute them through examples and similar opinions.
Decide on the thesis to support the topic: examine the pros and cons of each possible aspect of the topic and decide which side you want to be on.
Choose the tests and arguments that support your thesis; the effectiveness of the arguments often, if not always, depending on the strength of the arguments. In particular, the types of topics to choose can be divided:
concrete facts - to support the validity of the thesis, the author uses concrete facts and sources, which can be proven and demonstrated by public culture and knowledge;
authoritativeness - the arguments can derive from authoritative sources, that is personalities, associations or companies that play a role of great importance in relation to the topic in question.
