Family Planning Options
In the modern world, several types of family planning options exist. They include hormonal, emergency, barrier, long-lasting and permanent methods. Some of the long lasting family planning options that are reversible include uterine implants and intrauterine devices. Barriers include condoms and diaphragms. Hormonal drugs include injections of hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. Permanent methods include tubal ligation and vasectomy. All these methods seek to prevent pregnancy in cases of sexual activities between partners.
Long-lasting reversible contraceptives are the most prevalent among the elderly population. In most instances, they are used by women who have already given birth. These families do not wish to have children within a given period, though they are sexually active. They use such methods of contraception include intrauterine devices and implants. In the first case, a device is fixed on the uterine walls preventing conception after fertilization. Its main disadvantage is that it requires a prescription and is expensive. Implants also work in almost similar ways. Some scholars refer to them as fit-and-forget devices because their effect has been lasting for five years or more. These types of contraceptives are highly effective and have a minimal chance of errors. That is why, elderly couples who do not want to have children anymore prefer them. They are relatively expensive since they involve surgery.
Hormonal contraceptives are the most popular mode of family planning in most countries. Popularly known as pills, these involve injections or taking pills that contain certain percentages of hormones. They alter the hormonal balance of the reproductive system and prevent pregnancy. Moreover, pills reduce pimples improving appearance. Since they are quite flexible and cheap, it leads to their widespread use by young women who may not afford other family planning methods because of their high cost and uncertainty. However, pills have their own side effects such as causing irregular monthly periods and rushes. They require a prescription by the doctor. In addition, pills affect the menstrual cycle of the woman taking them. Since this method of contraception involves hormones, it is likely to cause hormonal imbalance. Nevertheless, many young women use it despite these adverse effects to their health. Since hormonal contraceptives affect their monthly flow, it is difficult to predict safe days among these women. Therefore, it can expose the woman to pregnancy.
Such barriers as condoms are the most widespread form of contraceptives in the modern world. They require no prescription in most instances. The use of condoms includes wearing rubber on the genitalia of sexual parties during sexual intercourse. It prevents sexual organs coming into direct contact preventing gametes from interacting. It is almost a sure way of preventing pregnancy. Both males and females can use condoms. It does not only prevent pregnancy, but also other sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis and HIV/AIDS. The disadvantage of this planning method is that condoms may break during intercourse exposing the parties to the effects of sex.
Another prominent type of family planning is the withdrawal method, whereby the couple partakes in sexual intercourse, but the male desists from ejaculating inside the vagina of the female so that gametes do not interact. No prescription is required for this kind of method since it is natural. Its disadvantages include the fact that it does not prevent diseases. In addition, it is unreliable because the man may fail to withdraw in time leading to sperms swimming inside and causing conception. Also, partnership working in health and social care is important nowadays.
Emergency contraceptives include those pills that a woman takes immediately after unprotected sex, probably less than seventy-two hours after it. They serve to prevent conception during female fertility days and are mainly used in rape cases, as well as among young women who do practice unwarranted sexual activities. Most emergency contraceptives require a prescription and cannot be used as a regular family planning option because of side effects.
In conclusion, contraceptive usage has always been a major source of family planning. The withdrawal method was in use even during the biblical days of Tamar. The advancement of science and technology has seen the humankind have more sophisticated methods of family planning, such as vasectomy, tubal ligation and even the development of barriers like condoms. All these methods serve to prevent pregnancy albeit not at 100%.
