Always looked a decent player when we've played the Police. On paper a quality acqusition

It will be interesting to see if we've kept Drage, I thought he was outstanding in the run in. With Pinnock as well it looks like we have 3 very good centre halves with probably Nelson at right back. With no Shaw (probably) we are a bit short on that side. Hoping Pinnock doesn't get moved across. It will also be hard to keep Drage, Pinnock and Sutherland with good game time

I suspect Drage might get edged out. Although he was outstanding individually I'm not sure the back four as a whole was quite as solid once Forbes was left out, and Pinnock's form dipped during that spell. Unless Pinnock is lined up for a transfer to a Football League club? As Ian says, I wouldn't have thought we could keep all three of these players unless Gavin is planning a radical tactical change to playing three centre backs.

Sutherland is a fantastic signing IMO. Plays right centre back, has been consistently excellent against us for the Plod over several seasons in masterminding a defence that always seemed near impenetrable. If I could have signed any centre back in our division he'd have been my first choice. A natural captain who could certainly replicate the mentoring role Forbes played in Pinnock's spectacular improvement.

Its not official but I have heard Matt is staying. Hope so and if we keep Frazier as well we will be an impenetrable unit .

Drage confirmed as signing:

Not sure if this means a contract or just registration forms for the new season, i.e. non-contract.

Steve Sutherland turned out for us (lewes) against brighton today. Interesting as he only joined you a few weeks ago

Think he may have more than a playing role at Lewes, I think im right saying theres another ex Police player with you who may have offered him a role. Coaching may beckon

Steve Sutherland

Sutherland was with the Plod for six or seven seasons and is aged 33. He was consistently excellent whenever he played against the Hamlet, for a side that was a real bogey team for us. (We never beat them in a league match during his time there and they usually kept a clean sheet.) We've got two very good young centre backs in Ethan Pinnock & Matt Drage, and it's been clear from the early pre-season games that the manager regarded them as his first choice with Sutherland as no more than back up.

Assuming he's gone, I think we'll probably need to sign another centre back as cover, otherwise we'll be relying on Sean Mason (ex-Youth Team) or maybe Mitchell Nelson switching from right back.

Im not sure the clarity came because of the form of Pinnock and Drage or that Sutherland has had the other offer from about the day he arrived. He spoke to me about a coaching role and I think that's fair enough. Initially I think Nelson would be the cover with Hibbert/Dixon as RB. Im with you though I think we are a defender short and a winger

Jay Lovett is the other ex-Plod player now at Lewes, so Sutherland is obviously well acquainted with him. Seems Lewes also had Jordan Wilson playing for them yesterday. I thought he was adequate but no more when we had him in D1S five years ago, and he seems to have been doing the rounds with the likes of Tooting and Carshalton since then.

I guess the dilemma we now have is adding a few really good squad players who are prepared to accept not being regular starters. Sutherland would have been a significant improvement on Michael Kamara for the back-up defender role IMO. Given that he lives in Hastings I can't help wondering how long Dixon will stay if he's behind Carew, Waldren and Scannell in the pecking order for numbers 4, 8 or 10?
