A few non-league ramblings

With respect to the players and the Club, if players could do what the fans want them to do they wouldn’t be playing at Harrow Borough or indeed at almost all of the other clubs at the current level. Sadly, success in football can be bought these days. Money talks.

Skill levels are noticeably lower at this level even than the division above – poor ball control, poor passing and shooting accuracy, failings to spot openings or to find space etc, are all obvious to most fans – and they get frustrated because they care about their Club and the game.

Team spirit, courage and fitness will get you so far but if eleven plus 5 sub HB players can’t get in more than one shot at goal in 90 minutes the harsh truth is they are unlikely to score more than once.

If managers would recognise the limitations of their players they would stop asking them to ‘play out from the back’ like Arsenal and Manchester City and revert to the old methods of getting the ball into their opponents’ half and even their penalty area (where most goals are scored). The system often even fails at the top levels of the game so is likely to be much higher risk at this.

Many managers in non-league are constantly telling players to run here, run there, go forward, go back etc. throughout the game. Most players have been playing the game since they were young kids – why not let them play, making their own decisions with just the occasional guidance ?

Football could hardly be a simpler game. How about playing it simply ?
