We all regarded Clay Cross as the Junction where the Derby to Sheffield line met the Nottingham to Sheffield line (Erewash Valley). It had a smell of it's own due to the large Coking plant nearby which always had a couple of pairs of 20's in the marshalling yard.
A few years later when they said that John Lowe came from Clay Cross I knew roughly where they meant.
Never really associated it as being 'close' to any depot although Westhouses (Bunked around one Sunday Teatime) was between there & Alfreton & Mansfield Parkway.
