What's in a name?

My birth certificate says Meriden, (Warwickshire), although I was actually born in Keresley (Warwickshire). On the Tamworth Road to be precise. (Tamworth incidentally was once in... Warwickshire).

My school records show that I attended schools in Coventry, (Warwickshire) - the correct postal address at that time. My father and grandfather had relocated first to Bedworth (Warwickshire) and then on to Coventry (Warwickshire), from Nuneaton (Warwickshire), where our family had lived for three generations. This after after relocating from Wolvey (Warwickshire) in the 19th (century. Looking for work with the advent of the railways. Always work.

In 1968 I went away to college in London. When I left, I lived in Coventry (Warwickshire). When I returned four years later, Stan Yapp and his fellow bureaucrats had got their heads together and I found out that my parents' house was now located in Coventry (West Midlands). They nicked the maroon buses and painted them cream and white. They painted the yellow fire engines red. They struggled to make everything uniformly brummie. They failed utterly, because the good people of Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall and West Bromwich weren't too chuffed by that. Neither were some of those previously residing in Birmingham (Warwickshire). Some were given trams to make them pipe down, but Brum is Brum and that's that. ( I took my second degree course at Birmingham University: it's a fine town. Sorry city. Sorry I mean urban conurbation).

Our story mirrors many in the area. Migrants from Leicestershire moving across into rural Warwickshire. Then off to Nuneaton (work). Then on to Beduff (work). Into Coventry (work) And back round again. This is why claiming artificial geographical "feuds" or "rivalries" between all these local towns (and many more) is just silly.

Fact is, family history is more about location than statute books or boundaries drawn on maps. I have lived in a (Warwickshire) village since 1987. It has a Leicester post code. A Hinckley phone code. The school is governed by Warwickshire Education Authority and our Health facilities are in Hinckley and Leicester. Rugby Borough Council have just emptied the bins this morning.

And I follow The Boro. Because of family roots, yes. But I shop in Nuneaton. I like it. I have family there. I bank there. I work for an NHS charity based at The GEH. But it's premises are in Bedduff. As are Boro right now. Small world.
