"A good think" later

It does not feel that much better this morning though, having slept on it. Yesterday's attendance was 1,711. Saturday's was over 1,500. This isn't a few people hanging over ropes on a recreation ground. The great majority involved were Boro fans and quite a lot were returnees, curious to see what had been going on over the last two seasons. . It was great to see so many old faces returning and frankly they are the life blood of any return to Nuneaton or any further progress beyond UCLS. What they have been served up with consecutively now, is a pale imitation of what we have seen over the last two seasons.
There's an inference (not in fairness from the management or any committees) that we should put up with this and accept it without comment or criticism. I don't agree. That would be fair comment if this was a Parks team or a Sunday morning run out on Pauls Land. But it isn't. It's a well run club now with a sound financial backing and a whole new era of transparency. Fans and supporters (and irregular attendees) have invested capital through the turnstiles, season tickets, donations, over the bars and counters, through purchase of merchandise ,through fundraising mechanisms, via sponsorship and by introducing new supporters or cajoling previous ones to return.
Accepting everything unquestioningly is what got us into a mess before. BoroTown fans are right to comment critically or to ask for answers when things don't seem right. I don't see anything wrong in ambition and aspiration and hope. I see plenty wrong with indifference, apathy and a shrug of the shoulders. I wouldn't take it as far at the poor bloke spilling most of his beer over himself in the stand during the second half yesterday. I don't condone what he was shouting. But I can see why he was annoyed.
It isn't just the fans who need to' have a 'good think' during the close season. Paper and pencils need to come out and strike a few names off retained player lists-if such a thing exists at this level. First to go should be those who have failed to put in a full shift now over the last two crucial games. CU's first goal should be the starting point of analysis when we see the match "highlights." A decent player from an opposing team, who caused us lots of trouble in the home fixture, ran virtually unchallenged from his own half to score. Why?
Next Saturday the playing staff owe those who have invested their time and money and voluntary effort over this season, an apology. On the pitch. If you can't face the heat ,or the pressure is too much, tell the gaffer beforehand and sit it out. No shrugs. No shouting at each other. If you do play, make every pass count, chase every lost cause and put your heart and soul into it. Bleed blue and white. Whether you are wearing pink, orange or bright purple.
Literally-you owe us that.
