Burnley were in the bottom league at the time
European qualifiers now
cant we ask them for a pre season re-match :-)

one or two famous faces on parade.

just wondering if Bob Lord was chairman or had he gone by then ??

ours is still meandering about well he was a few weeks ago :-)

one of my mates was a Burnley fan........ Bastards cost me a pint that result

Shows how transient football is.

Bob Lord? Never anything to do with boro, but was chairman of the league?
Most certainly Noel Kelly was Boro chair.

Tried to find the team for that day-failed.
Guessing here

1) Dulleston
2) Carr
3) Gibson
4) Dixie
5) Glover
6)
7) McGoldrick
8) Richardson?
9) Cuplin
10) Morley
11) Smithers.

Also - game was before safety invented - Remember gates on cock-and-bear end having to be opened towards the 1000s trying to get out.

I would have thought:

Blyth, Carr, Gibson, Bennyworth,
Thurman, Smithers, McGoldrick, Murphy,
Denyer, Brown, Hamill. Sub: Hutchinson

(Thanks to From Town to Town)

Suprised

I guess that was the 1st season post Graham Carr.

In which case the only name missing was Dixie.

McGoldrick was unplayable.

Any idea who scored.
IIRC 0-2, 2-2, 2-3

Just watching now. Band on for hslf time. My memory was of Boro pulling back to 2-2 right at the end then Blyth poor throw out gifted win to Burnley.

Didn't show how that winning goal move started, so I will never know.

Bill Baxter was years before that. I would guess circa 1975 and the Burnley game circa 1985

McGoldrick had 12 months added to his sentence at Boro'.
Joined Northampton with Harris (keeper) and I think Murphy made his way there also.

It was smithers 2nd spell at Boro having joined Oxford with Shotten.

Pretty sure this was 1st season after Carr, Cully, Morley and Hill departed.

I think Holmes was manager at this time, having followed Peter Morris.

http://www.fromtowntotown.org.uk/assets/nuneaton-borough-1970-79_part-2_approved.pdf

Nuneaton Borough’s FA Cup tie against Third Division Oxford United will be all-ticket. They will be on sale later this week – at increased prices. Terrace tickets will cost 70p and a seat in the stand £1.20 with pensioners and children paying 40p and 70p. The all-ticket decision and the price rises were agreed after discussions with the Third Division club.

26-Nov-77 (att 7759)

Borough: Knight, Stephens, Thomas, Cross, Peake, Lang, Phillips, Fleet, Vincent, Lewis, Smithers. Sub: Owen.
Oxford: Burton, Taylor, Fogg, Bodel, Clarke, Jeffrey, Seacole, Berry, Foley, Curran, Duncan. Sub; McGrogan.

for those looking at the 7759..... last two home games that season were 629, 283 (replayed league game), 772 BUT the BSCup final at CCFC against redditch drew circa 3,000
Gates were generally around the 1000-1100.

Shotten went to Oxford think Smithers did also and returned .....
if Murphy was the one we never paid Kettering 5k for then he went back to them or became their player again where he played afterwards i have no idea
i do now remember Bill Baxter played in the seventies not the eighties which is rather a DOH moment on my part as i saw him play for Ipswich at Leicester around 1965 amongst other clubs in that era

ref Shotton did not know that
think he played for Oxford in what is now the championship ...but im prone to errors :-)
whatever a very good footballer indeed
do remember going to Oxford 1958 then known as Headington the old ground changed little even when in the football league
played them off the park w 3-1 little winger called Jackie Stewart scored a stunning volley
we had a very good side

edited to add; we had two league gates over 6000 that season with several between 5-6000
that was our first year out of the Birmingham League
even against Wisbech who were a big name at the time we had well over 5000 they were known as the non league millionaires as they had several high profile big names including Jessie Pye playing for them.( again all from memory }
just goes to show how times and fortunes change

pps big Jack Dunne ( electricians mate ) used to bring me back away programme's
