1) McKenzie (Bob Knight as backup)

2) Stephens (bit before my time) with Oddy (forward thinking) as backup - Perhaps a historical weak area,
3) Prinderville (with Gibson as backup) - Full backs who like to get forward
4) Simpson (mainly because Moley reminded me).
5) Glover (with Moore as backup). - Class and Class.

7) McGoldrick (with hammil as backup)
6) Crowley (just did a job)
8) Williams (with Richard Hill as backup) - Perfect athlete who scored loads.
11) Smithers - steady and reliable.

9) Culpin - 1st stay particularly
10) Morley - Class. had to be in BUT (perhaps) Brown would have been a perfect/better foil for Cully.

Criteria I have used is that they must have played in the top flight for Boro.

When a lot of our better players played there was no Conference. Any player before 1979 could not play in it. In the 1960's and 1970's the Southern League Premier was as High we could get.
My team
1 Les Green
2 Willie Gibson
3 Phil Sandecock
4 Colin Davis
5 Bill Baxter
6 John Glover
7 Norman Ashe
8 Trevor Morley
9 Paul Culpin
10 Jon Sammells
11 Billy Hails
Subs
Andy Poole(gk)
Roger Thompson
Gareth Dean
Bobby Vincent
Eddie McGoldrick.

They all played at the top level available to Boro at the time.
Players like Rob Straw Ian Drewitt Tony Simpson did not play at the top level for us.

My selection is limited to the late 60s - early 80s. Apologies to the younger posters but I haven’t seen enough games in the last 30 years to judge later players.

Bob Knight
Kirk Stephens (or Alan Jones)
Trevor Peake
Bill Baxter
Wayne Thomas (tricky position as no-one from my era really stands out in my memory)
Jon Sammels (pure class)
Garry Fleet (possibly my all time favourite)
Dave Lewis
Bobby Vincent (pre-injury, of course)
Paul Cutler
Timmy Smithers

Sub: Gareth Dale (Mr Reliable)

With you on Fleet. Against Matlock in the FA Cup replay at Stafford he put in one of the finest individual performances I've ever seen from a Boro' player.

Good to see Dale get a mention too. Alan Hoult was another forward I really liked in that era.

The XI who played the last 20 games or so when Boro finished 2nd to Wealdstone.

Dulleston Poole

Hammil
Gibson
Dixie
Bennyworth

McColdrick
Smithers
Hill
Morley

Culpin
Murphy.

Absolutely unplayable.
Messi would not have got into that team :)

Only 2nd to McKenzie IMO.

Wouldn’t it be great to see “that goal” again.
Everyone who was there remembers it, but memory clouds things.

I seem to recall him stepping down to pick up the ball and it bounced over his shoulder (Bob knight bobble). Bit like happened to Fowlers (Blackburn; ex Solihull manager)

I was only reading yesterday how few times 'great teams" actually played togethers.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51491041

(for old-uns)
The classic Leeds team
( Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney, Terry Cooper, Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Johnny Giles, and Eddie Gray).
Only ever played together ONCE.......... but one very good reason for that.

Paul Richardson , Trevor Morley & Timmy Smithers for Lewis , Fleet & McGoldrick .
50/50 between Glover & Peake that's because i feel we can only judge him for us and we had him as a kid ( Peake )

Watched a lot of games, but only since 1993, so my time is more recent. A lot of players picked on longevity and ability rather than just ability, otherwise the likes of Lee Burge, Aaron Phillips, Nathan Cameron would be picked. Players I loved watching rather than necessarily the best too.

..............................Chris McKenzie

Andy Thackeray. Wayne Simpson. Terry Angus. Steve Prindiville

Tony Simpson. Ian Muir. Dave Crowley. Barry Williams.

Malcolm Christie. Marc McGregor.

I think we've had better strikers than McGregor too, but his whole demeanour, attitude and finishing were top class.

Wayne Simpson may not get in many others teams, but I thought he absolutely oozed class. The best ball playing centre half we've had in my time, who could also mix it as a proper defender when needed.

I think I may have enjoyed 98/99

Not sure if Christie would qualify under the "longevity" criteria.

Not 100% sure about your analysis of McGreggor.

Some players just ooze class - Simpson; Muir (and later Richard Hill when he returned and (I have to say Byrne)).

Your team is very "offensive" :) but they were all TEAM players who know their limitations and no prima-donna's (although I felt Christie, towards the end of his stay, needed to be taken to one side).

Christie was the exception longevity wise, he simply had to feature for me as the 95/96 and 98/99 teams really gave me the Boro buzz and he was a big part of that early season with Anton.

McGregor, by attitude, I meant he came across as an arrogant t**t, but in a loveable way.
