Does anyone remember ?

I'm trying to recall the opponents, the venue and the competition that we were in and resulted in a replay at a neutral ground.
All I can remember was that a screamer from Tim Smithers settled it and the deciding game was possibly played on a Friday night.
Can anyone please help ?

May be the Matlock game . Smithers scored a screamer in the 2nd replay at Stafford Rangers . It was actually the first goal , Cliff Campbell scored the winner . It was FA Cup 4th qual and we won 2-1 after successive 2-2 draws home & away . Matlock were a top team back then and we were the underdogs . Think from memory we lost to Crewe in the next round .

Think Turpie scored a hat trick that night. Barnet were our bogey side and I think that was our first win against them. Also think we travelled by train to that match.

remember playing them at MP when Jimmy Greaves played for them ......
well lets just say on the plus side at least he could stand up.
think he probably saw twenty two Boro players, a notorious piss artist.
he was never sober that day in a million years
think we won 2-1 so guessing it was after the Banbury season ?????
BTW nice to know of someone who actually verifies some of my experiences

Might have been the game when Steve Gray scored both Boro goals on what think may have been his league debut, if remember correctly Greaves spent the whole game moaning at the referee

That was our 1st ever game in the Alliance Premier League in 1979 . Steve Gray was one of a few Atherstone Players making their debuts for Boro after Atherstone went bust. Ken Hall Malcolm Shotton and Steve Tompkinson were 3 others I remember but there may gave been more.

I played with Stew for Keresley End Youth (under-18s) in about 1969. Along with a certain Jackie Manning who was about 10 !
Sorry for my indulgence !

cant remember the year
but as it was Greaves who dominated the scoring charts in the very late 50's and 60's
im guessing at the 70's.
problem used to be with footballers there was no millionaires in those days hence many earned more by playing non lge than when they played what is now called the premier.
the then laws were if a player was transfer listed for say like *Ron Mason ( wolves )
the name might be amiss btw ( memory ) he was transfer listed for £28000 a big big sum in its day
then any non league club could sign him for NOTHING !!! which a club did.
this transfer led to that law being abolished
* another name is somewhere between my ears but wont come out ( Peter Broadbent ) ????
too many ports and sherries :-)
when the maximum wage was abolished led by Jimmy Hill im sure many on here will remember the first 100 quid a week footballer Johnny Haynes the "Bylcream" boy whose fizz-hog was plastered on posters on most railway stations.
