REF; McKay / Vincent

i know this is a tad old hat
see someone has posted comments on Borochat regarding the pair joining the Boro from the adders
we had signed Barry Franklin from them for a fee of £ 1500 ( memory )
he did score goals but never really settled or indeed convince some of the faithful.
think it was Geoff Coleman the then manager ??? who wanted McKay, adders wanted their star striker back so to clinch the deal they chucked Vincent in. i was totally gobsmacked
having seen both play, McKay at 18 on his debut for Leicester City ( man of the match btw )
and Vincent who looked different class at Atherstone to me it was like winning the lottery
if there had been one then :-)
dont know who was running the adders at the time but boy had they a lot to learn about football

Believe it was Gill Merrick the ex England and Birmingham goalkeeper who was Atherstone Manager at the time, he wanted Franklin back and was prepared to let McKay and Vinno go to get him back. One of the best bits of business the Boro have ever done imo. There was also a lot of opposition from the Boro side to the transfer, if remember correctly some board members and I think even Coleman threatened to quit if the transfer went ahead

Think most fans were happy to see Franklin go, he never really delivered for the Boro. Also seem to remember Vincent starting on the wing for Boro somebody made a great decision putting up front. Don’t think Coleman signed Franklin think the transfer was one of many good deals by Coleman - didn’t he sign Baxter and Goodwin also - and Fleet the following season?

David Pleat
spoke to him a few times
could never understand his football logic,
told him to his face where we would end up with him in charge.
his logic was crazy but "hey ho" there you go.
from memory im thinking it was Alf Scattergood who finally dumped him

not my cup of tea for sure BUT fair play to him he went out and done it at a higher level
just goes to show in football its horses for courses

From memory Pleat was player manager think he got injured after a while and said he could no longer play, there was then some dispute with the board over money as they had been paying him to play and manage and they wanted to cut his wages when he said he couldn’t play anymore, think that was what lead to him leaving

I think he also specified "ambition of the board"

Whatever "ambition" actually means in the context of football!!

That was my era. Gary Fleet was a real star, with his Charles 1 hair and tache. I remember Pleat as player-manager scoring a great individual goal at the C&B end (v Mertyhr?) when his bandy legs weaved past most of their defence before tapping the ball into the net. Happy days!

think he brought in Gerry Baker brother of Joe Notts Forest ???
still think he talked a lot of shit whatever he did or didnot do
he brought some decent signings when he first came using his contact sources
but when this side of him gave up he struggled imo

there is some really good reads on boro chat at times
someone mentioned Ken Satchwell
signed from Cov City for £2250
around that time you could buy a new semi detached house then with that sort of money
came well into the season but still scored circa 25 goals think he scored all 5 in an away fixture Trowbridge ???? ( pass )
saw him play for Cov v Crystal Palace night game, think it was div 3 south.
scored a hat trick in the first half 3-0 up
think palace squared it up second half.
