Important Local History Ledger Preserved
Important Local History Records Donated to Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre -
Former Evening Tribune sports reporter Morton Birch kindly donated a very rare ledger to us which was used to log stories for the Nuneaton Observer and Evening Tribune newspapers.
The ledger has entries dating back to 1895.
Part of the ledger is crammed with fixtures, results and other information relating to Nuneaton Borough starting with the 1946-47 season and ending in 1968-69.
It was originally the property of journalist Gilbert Till who was at the Nuneaton Observer and later transferred to the Nuneaton Evening Tribune when the Observer was bought out by the Tribune in the 1960’s.
Gilbert was a director of Nuneaton Borough and also reported on their games.
If you look at his match reports from the 1950’s to the early 1960’s you will see that he never criticised the club - win, lose or draw.
One of the photos on our Facebook page shows a page from the ledger with details of Henry Axon, who was a relative of the Axon family who currently follow the Boro, and states he was Vice President of St Nicholas FC in 1893, the team from which the Boro was eventually born.
More interesting still is the rest of the ledger which is crammed with local history information that we think will be better served in the hands of our project partners at the Heritage Centre in Avenue Road.
One of the entries has details of a Canon F. R.Evans, who attended George Eliot’s funeral and whose father was George Eliot’s brother.
Further entries have detailed information of some other familiar local names such as Fielding Johnson, Harry Cleaver, Robert W. Swinnerton, Francis Alexander Newdigate-Newdegate; Dr Edward Noel Nason, Henry Lester, W. F. S. Dugdale amongst many others.
We would like to thank Mort (shown in other photos on our Facebook page, albeit several years apart!) for his generous donation which will preserve important local history information for future generations.
