Poor defence or poor attack, or just both?

By MJNB25/9 18:06Sat Sep 25 18:06:16 2021

I keep seeing we don’t have a striker etc. Don’t score goals.

But we have conceded 17 in 8 games. That’s over 2 goals per game.

So to win, we need to score 3.

That’s quite a lot of pressure on the attack to perform, when the defence don’t do their job.

If the defence kept it tight, we may be able to scrape some 1-0’s, 1-1’s etc. Not need 3 goals to get a point.

Absolutely both, Macmanus and Mcgrory are not central defenders and we have had nothing upfront all season

IMO its not so much having a striker who scores, but STRIKERS who can hold the ball up so bringing other into the game AND/OR strikers who make the opposition defence have to work. Also, strikers on the bench who can change thing. Three at least needed,,,,,,, boro have zero.

Ian Rush used to be a brilliant defender for Liverpool by not letting the opposition settle.
If the ball in the opposition half they ain't going to score (unless you have a Aussie keeper :) )

You need a goalscorer it’s goals that win games

We been here before :)

You cant win games with only clean sheets.

I rather watch a team that you know can score rather than a team you know can defend.

I would rather watch a team who score lots too.

But when ours aren’t capable of scoring many, it would be nice to have a defence who didn’t concede many either.

The Baxter/Vincent/Lewis side didn’t score lots of goals sometimes only one or two a game they also had a defence that let very few goals in.

I believe/remember them finishing 5th having scored 41 in a 42 game season BUT football was much more defensive then

I think it was more to do with the lack of protection of forwards, the emphasis on defending and how the offside rule was interpreted (and other rule changes.........basically had to commit GBH before being sent off).

I dont care who scores. If the ball does not "stick" up front then it puts pressure on defence.

Harwood, Quailey or Anton Thomas didn't score many BUT they contributed a hell of a lot for other.

I seem to remember him doing all the work for Christie to take the credit (I suppose that was just for 1/3rd season).

Yeps, he was our joint top scorer with Barry Williams I think.

Thomas 15
Williams 15
Christie 12
Wilkin 12
Muir 10

Along those lines

We are not good enough in any area of the pitch . Toothless in attack , uncompetitive in midfield and wide open at the back so take your pick .

Disagree on what you saying about midfield,

Aren’t they to blame for the defence being so open cause teams are getting through them to easily.

We are toothless up front
Weak in midfield
Wide open at the back

Simple as that

Still maintain with decent defence and forward line midfield would be ok, good teams defend from the front, there is no one in front or behind defending so our midfield is always going to be under pressure

"Defend fron the front"..... 100% agree.

(different times I admit), but Ian Rush did a hell of a lot of defending from the half way line.

Also, bottom line of football is the team that scores most goals win.

Not an excuse though for the other 9, one player running along the defence doesn’t make that much difference , they would still come forward just as much all they have to do is pass it past the one player

They allow the opposition far too much time / space . On numerous occasions this season opposition players have picked the ball up and been allowed to run half the length of the pitch without any sort of challenge or even anyone closing them down . Easy to look good when we are standing 20 foot away just watching them run .

One of many frustrations with JG is his persistence of playing one upfront with no support at all, was really disappointed in Edmunds, he isn’t the player he was when he first came, today he hardly got forward at all and offered no support to Caine
