Was a picture of Geoff Coleman team.

Thing is, that team was not made up of old ex-pros who can't get a game elsewhere and they stuck around for a least a season.

Old ex-pros that only had this level left. And that is not sarcasm.
After the Football League, our Southern League, the Northern Premier and the not-so up there Isthmian League was the level where they could get a real competitive game. And probably did it for peanuts and some petrol cash too.
Football then took some beating in my opinion. And then there is the automatic promotion to the FL issue.

In my opinion, automatic relegation from FL is as big a problem as promotion. Just look at the number of ex-league teams in the three National Leagues. Only those traditional non-league clubs with moneybags backers have any chance of competing against the demoted full-time pro clubs.

That has always been my view too. Bigger crowds in bigger stadiums creating more wealth too.
Genuine Non-league clubs have Everest to climb now,not just a mountain.

a lot of clubs were saved by the old pals act ie a closed shop.

many clubs with all the right credentials were ignored it was to put it bluntly a disgrace

Peterborough were massive at non league level who won the then midland Lge ? as they liked

Halifax were as far as i remember always one of the whipping boys.

ps just to add clubs used to just buy a player according to what month of the tax year it was
to keep the money in the game otherwise the taxman would claim it.
that was a well known ploy.

Yes, I am with you now VS.

When Southport were relegated from the Fourth Division, to be replaced by Wigan Athletic, they opted to play in the Northern Premier League, instead of dropping into the Alliance Premier League.

Southport, one of my all time favourite days out.

Haig Avenue is one of my favourite grounds & the town is one of my favourite places to visit.

Always a great atmosphere & a very vocal home support.

The only downside to me is that the away end is an open terrace & is uncovered.

The games there are always segregated.

The club have plans in place to re-build their main stand with a very impressive new one...

Those players still had a lot to offer.....
Remember when Hilly came back to us and tried to assassinate Nicky Anderson(Boro v Bedrock)...
Both got sent off, Anderson did a sharp left when he got to the tunnel, headed towards the Bedrock dug-out..
He didnt want to walk down the tunnel with Hilly, cant say I blame him...lol...
Hilly was probably well past it by then, but he was always entertaining...
Watched him a few times when he played for Hinckley Athletic....

I used to sit right by the tunnel in the stand in those days. They carried on and on, great excitement for a young lad.
