Alf Stokes

Tend to read the forum in spurts and just been reading with interest the players sold and bought in.
My memory isn't as good as my mate Joes (we were at some of those games but I can't remember) but I'm surprised nobody mentioned Alf. Perhaps he was free but he was class on the ball. Probably played 1 season or less. I stood at the back of the C&B end when he went on a mazy run and shot . He missed but nearly took me and the back of the stand out.
If I remember he was a record signing for Spurs not long before he joined us, by then his boozing had made him a few stone overweight but still very nimble at the Boro's level.
Can't think what season he played. Any offers?

cue joe :-)
you senile old git.
he played under Fred Badham
think he liked the pop which goes without saying.
famous tale about a training session
FB lined all the defence up then got Alfie boy to take a free kick
with the forwards waiting to move in for the cross
he put the ball down and promptly hammered the ball into the roof of the net from 25 yds out.
dont think it done their relationship much good from what i was told
some harsh words were exchanged

Hi bud great post
yes whatever the youth of today think ( cough ) and vs
they will never understand and you know what i think we can understand that
clubs that were sub Boro are now in the EFL
clubs that rose whilst we stagnated and finally faded even into oblivion
we were the big attraction the club they all wanted on their scalp list
i remember once going to a reserve game so what you say !!!
the attendance was 1500 !!!!!!! such was the appeal.
we all have to accept the reality of modern times
the passed glory days have gone, the memories remain
but you know what we are still around
UTB

…and me! I remember being shocked at how pronounced his limp was, but it was still great to see him back in blue & white.

bit of trivia
do you remember these all ex villa ie the then first division now premier
Roger Thompson RB played 76 games for villa reserves ie. central lge
think he was only about 21/22 when he came
A R Jones LW came from the villa played loads of reserve games played for the first team
at Fulham only a few weeks before signing 2-2 draw i believe involved in both Villa's goals
in his early 20's
Ralph Brown ( big let down ) played for the Villa in the first ever lge cup final against Rotherham
2 legged affair then and scored i believe, only 18 or 19 yrs of age.
not forgetting little Norman Ash. played about 8 times for the first team.
the remarkable thing is in todays football they would have been first team squad members
no reserves as such i believe these days.
can you imagine present day villa squad members leaving for a non league club !!!!!

ps anyone remember big Jack Lovatt saw him score a hat trick for WBA at the Hawthornes
scored on his debut with virtualy his first touch

One such club...Burton Albion, standing on the railway sleeper terracing at Eton Park & buying a cup of football match tea from the rail freight wagon tea bar.

One of my favourite grounds & away games, along with trips to the Bucks Head & Rockingham Road...always a great atmosphere at those grounds.
