If he's done well for the U18's, then U21's, and not played for the first team barely, you have to question the point of it.
we've struggled most of the season, brought players in left, right and centre, and one of the 'stars' of the academy hasn't played a league game for the first team and been able to leave.

I would hope any manager* at this level could tell from training and watching them play. A manager* of a semi-pro club cant just play kids to see if they are good enough.
There is a massive step up from the level U21s are playing to SLPremier.
* I should say "any decent manager"
