Speculation

Well, it has been fascinating to read here of opinions, discussion, rumours, gossip, hearsay, whispers, tittle-tattle, the word on the street, the buzz, and even scandal.
That's just the way is should be on a football website. Show me two Boro' fans and I'll show you four opinions.
I'm reminded of an 'exchange of views' one Monday evening at Manor Park in the 1970's.
The scene: the Cock and Bear end for a Midland Floodlit Cup game.
Remember, this is way before the internet days. The Trib. would have been put to bed earlier, and only the most basic information would have appeared in the stop press.
First Fan: Who's this bloody Barton Rovers the Boro' have got in the Cup?
Second fan: It's Barton on 'umber, near 'ull.
Third fan: Its ain't. It's Barton's Buses. It's the buzz team.
Second fan: It ain't the bloody buzz team. It's Barton on 'umber, near 'ull.
Third fan: It's the buzz team. Barton's buzzes. They've got a lot o' buzzes. They'll have a good team.
Second fan: It's Barton on 'umber, near 'ull.
Me: (tentatively) I think you might find it's Barton in the Clay in Bedfordshire.
All: Don't be daft. Barton in the Clay, never 'eard of 'em. What's he on abaht? etc etc.
So, sure enough, we are filing into the away ground less that two weeks later.
Mort Burch is already in place, ready to phone in his report to the 'Pink'.
He's sitting in a deck chair on the roof of their clubhouse, desperately trying to hold down the telephone receiver which is threatening to blow away from its cradle in the autumn wind.
And hundreds of Boro' fans are given a right royal welcome from Barton Rovers - in the Clay - in Bedfordshire.
It's nice to be right occasionally.

It was so muddy and I remember Mort falling off that deckchair to a loud cheer.

Mort, great days.
What Mort said was Boro gospel, in the Trib and the Pink on a Saturday.
Worked with him in those days, and later at the Echo in Bed'duth.
If you were not down to work on a Saturday afternoon it was a competition to go with him to run his copy, every 20 minutes, to the nearest phone box, if there was no line at the away ground.
He's happily ensconced on Alderney, in the Channel Islands these days, and will still talk for hours about Boro in those times.

Correct! The only keyboard warriors in those days operated Linotype machines.

As I’ve said many times, we badly needed Mort Birch during the JG era. No-one was asking the right questions.

Times (sadly) have changed - clubs don’t need the press now; the clubs have 100% control.
Remember the fuss over someone taking pictures during the Finnigan era!!!
Forgot that one in the soap operas that been the football club.
Pretty sure the trib (or whatever) has been banned in the past

Or pre that, as that is when the ludicrous original groundshare was agreed.

There is no doubt that groundshare and ground purchase were ill conceived on all sides.
Indeed using Manor Park as the get out of jail card was equally ill conceived.
But I’m sure long standing acrimony and separation of ground from club directly led to the inevitable.

Indirectly.
Failure to pay rent directly led to it.

As did sub letting and letting buildings disintegrate.
And by inevitable I meant Neale’s actions meant ultimately there could only be one code/Club at LW. Separating ground from Club then gave the opportunity.

With football clubs, like many other industries, able to control their own media output, it doesn't matter who is asking questions if the FC doesn't want to answer them.

It does if journos then write negative articles, eventually that would have an impact, if the trib was still being issued on a daily basis would JG have gotten away with keeping quiet about the rent and the debt rising!!

And if a newspaper carries a story that the club does not like, the club then denies it.
Or the main shareholder stands up in front of shareholders and says it is all lies.
And the fans listen to the owners rather than the journalists.
A tale as old as time.

Just in the last month we have had someone who wanted to start a new Boro say it was untrue when I said they wanted to start a new team, in a different town, in a different county and try to make you think it was Boro.
That was true, all true.
But he said it was lies.
And what did you do Stone fella? You lapped it up and swallowed it without hesitation.
You could see he was lying.
We all could see he was lying.
But you ignore the truth to suck up to the man who may have power.
You did it this month.
The exact thing you doubt when I say it, you did it.

And there were those who thought the only reason DA Capital had purchased Boro Leisure was to get the club into the National (if not FL) then sell for a profit.
Have a search of Boro Chat to see how many welcomed Smurf/Hawkins/JG to the club and saw them as saviours (and praised them when they walked away). Others (at best) were sceptical with some hostile.

It happened.
Time and time again.
Stocker, Smurthwaite, Hawkins, all had fits when journalists asked them questions and published facts.
All of them.
All of them stood in front of fans and said "no, that is wrong, nothing to see here" and the fans believed them.

Lurching from one set of big time Charlies to another finally killed the Boro yet when 2 more came along there were still many supporters clamouring to follow them.
If the people really want a new start that may eventually lead to the return of a senior football club in Nuneaton to be proud of then get behind this new initiative.
We may just end up with our “own” Boro.

Yes over fifteen years of incompetence, but what’s happened has happened, we can’t keep going on about it all the time ,nearly every day to be precise, let’s move on and look to the future, with what’s in the pipeline and being planned I can’t see the Boro in that situation again.
