Great interview. Didn’t realise he gave Kirk Stephens his debut at Nuneaton I thought that was Geoff Coleman. Also he misrembers the Torquay game we had a goal disallowed near the end but I think Torquay scored much earlier. Still a really interesting interview.

Kirk Stephens and Ade Newbury
Views: 922
I first met Pleaty when Ade lived next door to me. Kirk and Ade were at one time the full back pairing when Boro' had a really good Youth team. Both were with the Coventry City Youth set up. originally, I believe. Ade certainly was. They also had some connection with Coventry Sporting at one time. I seem to remember that David Kite had something to do with them going to Boro'. Could be wrong there.
Ade was recruited and signed by Peterborough and things were going well for him there until Jim Iley took over. Kirk of course went on to greater things
I played in a few games against Ade. He was a fearsome tackler. The last time I managed a full 45 minutes, Kirk, Benno, Brendan Phillips Dean Emerson and Les Cartwright played for the opposition. We had Danny Thomas and Kevin Kane playing for us. It was murder.

I've been watching Boro for 53 years and have never heard of Ade Newbury.
Shows how much I know.
Note to self, 'be careful what you wish for'

ref Pleat'y
football is all about opinions... we all have one.
i liked him, we had one or two chats, real nice guy.
we didn't always agree. hands up totally admit im a nobody
but surely we are all entitled to our opinions
i take my cap off to him he done well for himself far exceeded my expectations
obviously a guy who learned from his mistakes
think the club was a good grounding for him. suspect he learnt a lot at the Boro.
too many big names just go in at the top ie. thats why so many fail
ps im probably wrong didnt Scattergood sack him ( faded memory )

Replaced by Geoff Coleman who went on to produce one of the best three teams the Boro ever had.

Boro sold John Gill to Atherstone (for £200) less than a fortnight after Pleat had said he wanted him to stay.
Scattergood done the deal with Reg Read of Adders.
Two days later we were smashed 4-1 away at Kettering (att- 2464)
That evening Pleat resigned. Geoff Coleman took charge.
Five days after Pleat resigned (due to fan pressure) Scattergood resigned as Chairman (he remained on the board)
Vice Chairman Ken Peel became chairman.
About 3 weeks later Coleman and Peel resigned along with company secretary Sam Downs.
They resigned "as a matter of principle" after the board blocked a transfer deal that would see Barry Franklin rejoin Adders in exchange for Bobby Mackey and Bobby Vincent.
Two days later the deal was done anyway.
Then fans handed in a petition calling for Scattergood, Ces Dawson and Ernie Davonport to quit. It was those three who had tried to block the deal.
Next day all three quit.
Ken Peel and Sam Downs were asked to return.
Following week.. handshakes all round as Peel and Scattergood made up.
Peel took over as chairman with Scattergood remaining the Manor Park Social Club Chairman.
Scattergood, Davenport and Ces Dawson offered life vice presidencies.
Roughly a month in the life of Nuneaton Borough in the Autumn of 1973.

cheers for the info bud.
some of it is now coming back to me.
ps. was at the Kettering game.
fwiw he DP brought in some decent players originally
league players who he knew. however i think he lost the plot.
just my opinion.
one thing for sure i take my hat off to him
as he went places and proved my opinion of him being wrong
after the BORO that is. :-)

Maybe but Coleman’s team was a massive success. I’m trying to remember who Coleman brought in, McKay, Vincent (might be wrong there), Goodwin, Baxter, Bruck

a lot of water under the bridge since those days ;-)
from memory the Adders wanted their favorite son Barry Franklin back
GC wanted McKay
i was told that they chucked Vino in to sweeten the deal.
true or false ? who knows, thats how i remember it unfolding
you wud have to ask Geoff that one.
alas as the years pass it all gets that bit more blurred.
so dont be surprised if im wrong
pps remember going down the adders when the likes of Stan Marshall Malc Allen
and big Jack Dunn got involved.
also remember Ernie Hunt playing for them
made the likes of Wayne Rooney look positively anorexic ;-)
im pretty sure De Mulder was the chairman in those days

Andy Rammell

There's a name to conjure with.
Sheepy Road was my first ever toe in the water with Non League. Circa 1964. Monty Moreton was their flying winger. Up front with John Hicks.
Next time I went there after that was with The Boro' Quite lairy whenever we played them.

As you mentioned, a great family. Had the pleasure of playing along side Andy at Drayton FC with Lee Spencer & co. Great times never will forget them.

The cheque they got from man united (£30,000) was (and may still be) displayed in the Atherstone board room.
If only they had cashed it 🤪🤪. Guess it’s too late now😀

One of the few times I sat in the Main stand at MP was to watch the Youth side circa 1975.
Never liked it. Always preferred the CABE

Not sure that tangent had much to do with the Boro or Nuneaton.
Would be nice to read on here about Pleat’s time in Nuneaton! It’s a great interview!

Bit of a silly comment Gustavus. Far from a tangent . Pleat recruited them both. He had an eye for Youth talent and the scouting network. Post had everything to do with Boro and Nuneaton. First ever visit for me to MP , in the 1970's. Did not go back there until the Beazer Midland circa 1987.
Glad the truce did not last long. Always felt uneasy with it. Must have a pint some time. Sort out our differences.

I don’t think he actually played for the first team. Worked with him at the Jag Browns Lane.

Sure you are right, Hgblue. Ade definitely didn't ever play for First Team. He was only about 17 at that time. Kirk played for Boro 1st X1. But not at that time I don't think.
And there was definitely a Browns Lane connection. I had forgotten that. Cheers!
