Fairly sizeable crowd for the Warwickshire derby. Good contingent of Nuneatonians.
Even first half. Typical Derby. Their coach v energised. Boro created some good chances but couldn’t put them away!

Not much in terms of teams first half think they probably edged it.
Second half we were completely out played, cant remember us having a shot on goal all game really. Could of easily been 6 or 7 nil.
Got to say the bench isn't strong enough and our tactics play into most teams plans, no clue in how to change things.
Dont want to bash any players but Hendrie ... why is he still at the club, bench player for the last two seasons and just not good enough. Anyone see the corner he took ?
Anyway they weren't brilliant but had us in there pocket ....
We move on

Yes it was until 1974, until the county boundaries changed.
Not been in Warwickshire since and is unlikely to be in ever again.
It's not just for administrative purposes, it physically isn't in Warwickshire anymore.
I suggest you look at the counties on a map.
You may aswell say Coventry is in Warwickshire if you go by your logic! 😆

No the 1972 Act which specifically created the metropolitan areas like the West Midlands specifically stated it did not change the historic county boundaries or loyalties.
I suggest you look here:
https://realcounties.com/
Where you will find Sutton Coldfield has always been in and remains in Warwickshire.
The West Midlands is an administrative area not a county.
On the basis you’re suggesting then Leicester wouldn’t be in Leicestershire; Nottingham wouldn’t be in Nottinghamshire and Leeds wouldn’t be in Yorkshire.
Sorry but you are wrong about this!

Absolute nonsense!!
Historically yes.
From 1st April 1974 no.
The six Metropolitan areas formed in 1974 are officially classed as counties.
For example, Liverpool is now in Merseyside, whereas pre-'74 it was in Lancashire.
Leicester & Nottingham are still in their original historic counties as their boundaries were unchanged.
Warwickshire got split up when Birmingham & Coventry went into the West Midlands.
When I lived in Coventry all my addressed mail stated 'West Midlands' never Warwickshire.

I’m sorry it’s you talking nonsense.
The historical counties remain and the legislation specified there should.
The metropolitan areas are administrative areas only. They are not historic or geographical counties.
Read the link I sent you and you will understand!
Leicester is not in Leicestershire county council area. There is no Yorkshire council area. And Nottingham isn’t in Nottinghamshire county council area.
It’s the same situation as Warwickshire

Yes, 'historical'. Pre-'74.
You've just confirmed what I said.
That link you sent just shows the old counties as they were before the boundary changes after the 1st April 1974.
The current map is completely different lol.
The Metropolitan areas post-'74 are administrative and counties in their own right.
Leicester is a city within Leicestershire and Nottingham a city in Nottinghamshire.
Warwick is the county town of Warwickshire.

No the historic counties is the correct name to use for the current geographical counties hence why that site is called real counties to educate people like yourself who don’t understand no piece of legislation ever abolished or changed the historic county borders.
Leicester and Nottingham are metropolitan areas with unitary authorities and metropolitan Mayors. But nobody would place them outside their county borders in the way that people like you have misunderstood with Warwickshire.
Seriously read the detail on the website and you will understand that the 70s metropolitan areas were for admin purposes and did not change county borders

You clearly haven’t read it then!
Just because you always believed something to be the case doesn’t mean it was correct.
Every written answer from the government post the 72 Act has confirmed the historic counties continue to exist and the borders are unchanged.
West Mids was an admin area and it was subsequently abolished. It was never a geographical county!

The West Midlands is a geographical county formed in 1974.
The article actually states: 1972 itself described the new top-tier areas as local government areas which were “to be known as counties".
Hence why maps were changed to show the new counties and boundary changes and even Ordnance Survey maps were re-drawn.
Yes, the West Midlands County Council was abolished in 1986, but was later replaced with the West Midlands Combined Authority.
Also Leicester and Nottingham are not metropolitan areas as you incorrectly pointed out and never have been.
The real counties article is fascinating , but it focuses on historic counties pre'74, not the present day. Good for historians though.

Re: 0-0 HT
Views: 410
No that’s wrong.
The west mids was created by the 72 Act and came into existence in 74.
This is what the act stated:
“The new county boundaries are administrative areas, and will not alter the traditional boundaries of counties, nor is it intended that the loyalties of people living in them will change despite the different names adopted by the new administrative counties.”
This is why you are muddled. It was simply an admin area. And indeed the west mids combined authority actually covers a different and wider geographical area so is a different admin entity entirely to the old council. It did not affect the geographical counties and that is why to day was a Warwickshire derby!

You're confusing myths with facts. Counties aren't some divinely placed geographic regions, they are human creations.
The old boundaries were only administration aswell.
Unfortunately Sutton Coldfield is now in the West Midlands, along with Birmingham and has been for 52 years.
Too much nostalgia. Things change, get over it.

I don’t mean this offensively but that’s just ignorance.
The English geographic county borders have been continuous over a thousand years of history.
Just because you have wrongly assumed something doesn’t make it a fact.
I’ll leave it there now because this is clogging up the forum.
Read the legislation, read the actual sources, read the continually stated government position. And please do actually read the website links.
Both Nuneaton and Sutton Coldfield are in Warwickshire and despite the result I enjoyed a contest Derby today.

What's in a name?
My birth certificate says Meriden, (Warwickshire), although I was actually born in Keresley (Warwickshire). On the Tamworth Road to be precise. (Tamworth incidentally was once in... Warwickshire).
My school records show that I attended schools in Coventry, (Warwickshire) - the correct postal address at that time. My father and grandfather had relocated first to Bedworth (Warwickshire) and then on to Coventry (Warwickshire), from Nuneaton (Warwickshire), where our family had lived for three generations. This after after relocating from Wolvey (Warwickshire) in the 19th (century. Looking for work with the advent of the railways. Always work.
In 1968 I went away to college in London. When I left, I lived in Coventry (Warwickshire). When I returned four years later, Stan Yapp and his fellow bureaucrats had got their heads together and I found out that my parents' house was now located in Coventry (West Midlands). They nicked the maroon buses and painted them cream and white. They painted the yellow fire engines red. They struggled to make everything uniformly brummie. They failed utterly, because the good people of Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall and West Bromwich weren't too chuffed by that. Neither were some of those previously residing in Birmingham (Warwickshire). Some were given trams to make them pipe down, but Brum is Brum and that's that. ( I took my second degree course at Birmingham University: it's a fine town. Sorry city. Sorry I mean urban conurbation).
Our story mirrors many in the area. Migrants from Leicestershire moving across into rural Warwickshire. Then off to Nuneaton (work). Then on to Beduff (work). Into Coventry (work) And back round again. This is why claiming artificial geographical "feuds" or "rivalries" between all these local towns (and many more) is just silly.
Fact is, family history is more about location than statute books or boundaries drawn on maps. I have lived in a (Warwickshire) village since 1987. It has a Leicester post code. A Hinckley phone code. The school is governed by Warwickshire Education Authority and our Health facilities are in Hinckley and Leicester. Rugby Borough Council have just emptied the bins this morning.
And I follow The Boro. Because of family roots, yes. But I shop in Nuneaton. I like it. I have family there. I bank there. I work for an NHS charity based at The GEH. But it's premises are in Bedduff. As are Boro right now. Small world.

There are two re-organisational proposals currently being considered by Warwickshire County Council.
The first is for Warwickshire to become a single unitary authority & joining the West Midlands Combined Authority, which already comprises seven Metropolitan Boroughs.
The second, favoured by Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council, is for Warwickshire to become two unitary authorities, split North & South, with Nuneaton Town Hall being the administrative centre for the North.
On the subject of the Shires, there are 39 shires still in existence both historically & culturally.
Local sport can also opt to base its competitions on the shires (eg Warwickshire Cricket League).
Edit:
The Association of British Counties is a good reference, they also provide a map.

Well, I'm gonna have to source an old map from 1973 as my current AA road map from 2022 is completely inaccurate. I need the 'historic counties' version.
Mine shows six metropolitan counties on the map that don't actually exist today according to Mr.Gustavus.
Unless I upgrade my map or satnav to a 1973 version my planned road trips to Merseyside & Greater Manchester could prove very tricky indeed! 🤔😆

I have read the article.
All it confirms and shows is the map of the counties of England before April '74.
What you have said is absolutely correct for pre-1974.
But new counties were formed and boundaries changed in '74 and still exist today in 2026
Metropolitan boroughs in England (such as Birmingham or Leeds) belong to metropolitan counties like the West Midlands or West Yorkshire.
Leicester and Nottingham are inside the non-metropolitan counties of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire respectively, but are completely independent of those county councils for local government.
Both Leicester and Nottingham combine the functions of both a county council and a district council within their city boundaries.
Same for Derby.
There are six metropolitan counties: Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.
They all have their own police forces too.

Re: 0-0 HT

Oh and further to above leicester and Nottingham are unitary authorities which cover the city alone. They are completely separate to the county councils. If your logic applied they’d be separate counties but they aren’t and aren’t regarded as such.
As for postal address you mentioned earlier. Another red herring. You can use any county name you want on them! The main thing is the postcode.
And here’s the specific link you need to read

Unless something changes they will be at the same level as Boro next season.
Averaging 1500.
Income from gates is not such a big factor as it was.
The model at the Boro is not designed for success, it's designed for sustainablity. Look at what happened when that sustainability was not considered.

Should we? Playing budget based on an average crowd of 400. I don't know what any of the other clubs playing budget is based on in this league. Many have their own grounds (so no rent on top to pay) and benefactors putting in extra cash.

We are now in a level where more clubs have individual owners who pay a lot out of their own pocket too. Cov Utd have to be one of those clubs imo, partly for the seasons you mentioned. Hiring that ground and being able to compete* on the crowds they get must mean the cash for players is coming from somewhere.

Agree early days no problem with that.... but we dont seem to match teams..... first half today we did ..... second half we couldnt and we had nothing in the locker to change it. The bench isn't strong enough and I believe were looking at players/ asking other managers .
Regarding finances.... looking it from the outside just because we pay rent, no bar or food takings etc etc we're still a big club ( gates, sponsorship, merchandise) we should be able to match the top teams on wages without going over budget. I get some players will be on big money but there's plenty .... plenty who aren't. Recruitment is the key.
As i said above I believe we're looking at players.... is this because we haven't recruited right in the first place???? ( i dont know )

Wasn't there today, but it sounded like we were rocked by two early goals in the second half and then were down to 10 men not very long after that. Which means it's also going to be difficult to compete.

There lies the problem. I posted ,when Jardine quit, that finding a replacement who could score with his regularity would be difficult. Several posters disagreed, and seemed to believe us being a well supported club would attract such players. Without breaking the budget I believed that we would not find such a replacement; that seems to be the case. Scoring aside, I still believe that any successful team is built around a solid defence. Get that right then the results will follow. We don't , at the moment, seem very strong at the back. Whether this is due to how the defence is set up, or a lack of understanding amongst the new players I honestly don't know.
