How do you use AI feedback without letting it take over the essay?

I think the difficult part of using AI for academic writing is deciding what to do with its suggestions. Getting feedback is relatively straightforward. Knowing whether that feedback improves the argument requires a much closer reading.

For me, the value of AI solutions for students depends on whether they help the writer make better decisions. Taking https://essaysbot.com/ as an example for discussion, I would want to know whether its feedback helps students understand why a paragraph needs revision. A polished version is less useful if the student cannot explain the changes.

Take a fairly ordinary situation: a student has written a paragraph with a relevant source, but the evidence does not quite support the topic sentence. Asking a writing assistant to “improve this paragraph” may produce smoother wording while leaving that problem unresolved. Asking “What does this evidence establish, and where does my claim go beyond it?” gives the student something more useful to investigate.

I would apply the same approach to an outline. Rather than request a complete structure immediately, I would have the student prepare a plan from the assignment instructions and their reading. Then they could ask for questions about missing connections or an overlooked counterargument. They would still need to decide which questions matter.

Sources are where I would insist on a separate check. An explanation can sound reasonable even when its reference is incorrect or its interpretation is too broad. The student needs to read the original publication and confirm that it supports the claim. Checking reference formatting alone does not address that.

One practice I would suggest is keeping a brief note about a significant revision: what the tool suggested, what the student changed, and why. It does not need to become an extensive record. Even one accepted suggestion and one rejected suggestion could provide a useful basis for a writing consultation.

I would judge the result partly by whether the student can recognize the same problem in their next essay. If they still need the system to make every decision, I would question how much learning has taken place.

For those who teach or tutor, what has worked for you? Do you ask students to explain how they used AI feedback, or do you mainly assess the submitted draft?
