How Do You narrow down the research paper topic without making it to limited?

I keep running into the same problem whenever I start a research paper: my first topic is usually far too broad, but once I narrow it down, I sometimes end up with something so specific that I struggle to find enough reliable sources.

For example, starting with a topic like “social media and students” gives me way too much material. But if I narrow it down too aggressively, there may not be enough academic research available to support the paper properly.

What usually works for me is checking three things before settling on the final topic:

1. Is the topic focused enough to answer within the required word count?
2. Can I find enough peer-reviewed or credible sources on it?
3. Does the topic leave enough room for analysis rather than just description?

I was also reading some guidance on research paper writing help and noticed that defining the research question early can make the whole outlining and source-selection process much easier.

How do you normally decide when a research topic is narrow enough? Do you choose the sources first and then refine the question, or finalize the question before doing deeper research?
