Do cup runs hurt league performance?

This is something I’ve been thinking about recently, especially with how packed the football calendar has become.
On one hand, a good cup run (like in the FA Cup or League Cup) can give a club momentum, confidence, and even financial benefits. For smaller clubs, it can be massive for morale and exposure.
But on the other hand, there’s the obvious downside: fixture congestion and fatigue. Players already cover huge physical demands every match (often 9–12 km per game), and adding extra fixtures increases the risk of burnout and injuries . Recent analysis also suggests that teams competing on multiple fronts can look “jaded” later in the season due to overloaded schedules .
Do cup runs actually hurt league performance, or is it just an excuse for poor form?

Personally, I think it depends heavily on squad depth. Top teams can rotate, but lower-league sides might struggle when juggling both competitions.
