Mercedes AC smells sweet and the windscreen fogs up, is that a leak?
For the last few days my Mercedes C200 has had a faint sweet smell inside the cabin when I switch on the AC, and the windscreen fogs up with an oily film that is hard to wipe off. The AC still blows cold, but it feels weaker than before. The car has about ninety thousand kilometres. I live in Sharjah and work near Industrial Area 2, so the car sits in the sun all day and the AC runs hard. My cousin says it is just dust and humidity and I should clean the glass. A friend says a sweet smell with a greasy fog can mean a leak from the heater core, which can be a big job and should not wait. I looked online for a Mercedes AC specialist near Industrial Area 2, but every page said the same thing, so I still do not know what a proper check includes. Does a good shop pressure test the cooling system and check the coolant level first? Can a sweet smell come from the AC itself, or is it always coolant? Is it safe to drive with this smell for a few days? Does the dashboard have to come out, and why is the repair so costly? How long does a check take, and what should it cost on a Mercedes? If your car had the same smell, please tell me what the cause was, what you paid, and what you would do differently. Easy answers help me most.
