Poor Old Joe

The previous thread seemed to be getting vitriolic and seemingly attracting a response from Poor Old Joe. Poor Old Joe was a music hall song before my time and therefore before the time of The Surrey Sage!!! It has also been used as a hymn tune.

Brian Clough , in his autobiography had deliberately left a page completely blank. He titled the page “what the average director knows about football.” There is a poor old Joe who purchased a football club as part of a consortium. He bought out his partners and became the sole owner of the club. He still owns the club. He thought that the gold in the team’s shirts was a pot of gold for him. He failed to understand that without investment on the pitch, fringe support will disappear. The team cannot be competitive. In his case the core support remained. In fact, the integrity of those supporters enabled the club to fulfil its league obligations last season. Apparently the club has yet to register for the current season.

If he looks at the proper business model for football: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, he should have seen major investment in players comes before increased fan base (including attendances), increased publicity and increased support from the community.

He epitomises the Brian Clough illustration. Poor Old Joe.
